am ount o f tubing necessary to form a double-lap flare.
Slip the punch into th e to ol body w ith the gauge end
tow ard the die blocks. Install the ram ; then tap lightly
un til the p u n ch m eets the die blocks and they are forced
securely against the stop plate (Fig. 13).

Using the supplied w rench, draw the latch plate nut
dow n tight to prevent the tub e from slipping. Tightening
the n uts alternately (beginning w ith the n u t at the closed
hole in the plate), will prevent distortion o f the plate.
Rem ove the punch and the ram . Now reverse the punch
and p u t it back in to the tool body. Install the ram and
tap it until the upset flare is com plete (Fig. 14). This
com pletes the first operation. Remove the ram and the
punch.

. To com plete the flare, insert the po in ted finish flare
punch and the ram in to the tool body. Tap the ram until
a good seat is form ed (Fig. 15).
N O T E :
The seat should be inspected at intervals
during the finishing operation to avoid over-seating.

Blow tubing out w ith com pressed air to remove any
foreign objects.

DRUM BRAKE ADJUSTMENT

SERVICE BRAKE

A lthough the brakes are self-adjusting, a prelim inary or
initial adjustm ent m ay be necessary after the brakes have been
relined or replaced, or whenever the length o f the adjusting
screw has been changed. T he final adjustm ent is m ade by using
the self-adjusting feature; see Step 3 following.
1. W ith brake drum o ff, disengage the ac tu a to r from the
star wheel and ro tate the star wheel by turning w ith your
hand.

Recommended Method of Adjustment

a.
Use Drum -to-Brake Shoe Clearance Gauge, J-2 1 1 77
to check the diam eter o f the brake drum inner
surface (Fig. 16).
b.
Turn the tool to the opposite side and fit over the
brake shoes by turning the star wheel until the
gauge ju st slides over the linings (Fig. 17).
c.
R otate the gauge around the brake shoe lining
surface to assure proper clearance.

Alternate Method of Adjustment

a.
Using the brake drum as an adjustm ent fixture, tu rn
the star wheel un til the drum slides over the brake
shoes w ith a slight drag.
