W ith the wiper m o to r circuits com pleted to ground via the
parking sw itch, the wiper m otor continues to operate until the
w iper gear cam opens the park sw itch contacts (Figure 13)
stopping the wiper.

DIAGNOSIS—WIPER ON VEH IC LE
Diagnosis w ith wiper installed on th e vehicle consists o f 2
basic steps:
Prelim inary In sp e c tio n -(B ) O perating w iper independent o f
vehicle w iring and dash switch.
A. Prelim inary Inspection: C heck the following items:
1. B ody wiring securely connected to wiper unit and
dash switch.
2. Wiper ground con n ection to vehicle chassis.
3. Dash switch is m o u n ted securely.
4. Fuse.
5. With ignition sw itch " ON" , there is 12 volts at
center term inal (No. 2) o f wiper connector body.

B. T o determ ine if w iper is cause o f trouble, disconnect
existing harness from wiper and connect jum per leads to
wiper term inals as show n in Figure 18. Try operating
wiper in LO, and HI speeds then check if wiper will shut
o ff properly (blades in PARK position).
If w iper operates correctly, trouble m ust be in wiring
harness or dash sw itch. R efer to Diagnosis C hart. If wiper
fails to operate correctly, remove wiper.
WIPER MOTOR REPLACEMENT (Fig. 19)
1. M ake sure w iper m otor is in Park position.
2 . O pen hood and rem ove ground cable from the
battery.
3. R em ove w iper arm and blade assem bly, then rem ove
screw and securing cow l panel.
4. L oosen nuts holding transm ission linkage to wiper
m otor crank arm.
5. Inside the vehicle, disconnect pow er feed to wiper
m otor at m ultiple connector next to the radio.
6. R em ove left dash defroster outlet from flex h o se and
push h ose aside for access to w iper m otor screws.
