LEAN EXHAUST INDICATION.
Code
44
is set if conditions exist as for code 13 but
O2
sensor voltage remains low for more than
50
seconds.
I
Engine at normal operating temperature.

Connect diagnostic bridge.
Run engine at approx
2000
rpm for
2
minutes and note ECM light.
Refer page ES-25 to read ECM light.

Light staying "off" more than "on':
or flashing "open loop".
staying on and off approximately

Ignition "off".
Remove diagnostic bridge.
Disconnect oxygen sensor.
Start engine and hold rpm at approx.
2000
for at least
30
seconds.
What does ECM linht do?
Code is intermittent. If no additional
codes were stored, look for poor
electrical connection and see below.
Check the following:
I
I

Low fuel pressure.
-
Contaminated fuel.
-
Vacuum leak on inlet system.
-
Exhaust manifold leaks
Ahead of
O2
Sensor.
Flashing
open loop.
-
Faulty airflow sensor.
-
O2
sensor metal vent
covered with mud, etc.
-
Lean injectors.
I
Clear ECM learned parameters.
I
Reconnect
O2
sensor.
Repeat step (1) above.
I
Light went off
for at least
30
seconds.
I
O n
sensor faulty.
I
Ignition "off".
Disconnect ECM connectors.
Check
O2
signal circuit AN18 for a short to earth.
If circuit AN18 is shorted to earth, repair wire.
If circuit AN18 is not shorted to earth, it is a
defective ECM.
Flashing normal closed loop,
light flashing approx.
I
Code intermittent
Possible past rich operation
of the engine, learning factor
overcompensating after prior
fault removed.
I

High fuel pressure.
I
-
Leaking injector.
I
-
Cannister purge.
-
Coolant sensor.
- TPS sensor.

Air flow sensor.

Clear codes, run engine for
2 minutes and reccheck for codes.
-
Failure to clear system parameter
after prior repairs.
