Setting Uplink Channel and Power Control

The uplink channel setting sets the test set's receiver to the UE's (mobile station) transmit frequency.
The power control settings are used to control the UE transmit power during a call. You can set closed loop
power control to be active or inactive. You can also set which power control algorithm is to be used during
closed loop power control. When closed loop power control is inactive, various data patterns are availabe for
you to control the power manually and test the UE's response. You can also send Transmit Power Control
(TPC) bit patterns to step the power up or down one step at a time to verify the accuracy of the UE's power
amplifier.

Changing Uplink Channel and Power Control Settings

Changing the Uplink Channel Number
The Uplink Channel setting cannot be changed directly while using Active Cell Operating mode. Use the Cell
Off operating mode when changing the Uplink Channel number. See
operating modes.
A hard handoff can be performed to change the uplink and downlink channels (UARFCN) while a call is
connected. Use the Handoff Setup controls on the Active Cell Operating Mode screen to change these channel
numbers.
Uplink Power Control Settings
Specifying the Type of Uplink Power Control to Use The uplink closed loop power control (UL CL Power
Ctrl) can be set to the following data patterns:
• Active bits - activates closed loop power control. Closed loop power control maintains the UE's average
power at the value entered for the MS Target Power. The MS target power setting is also used to set the
expected power level into the test set's receiver (see
• Alternating bits - sends alternating power up and power down bits to the UE. Using this setting should
cause the UE to continuously transmit at a set power level.
• All Up bits - sends a continuous pattern of power-up bits. This is often used to drive the UE to transmit
at its maximum power level.
• All Down bits - sends a continuous pattern of power-down bits. This is often used to drive the UE to
transmit at its minimum power level.
• 10 Up/Down bits - sends a repeating pattern of 10 power-up bits and 10 power-down bits.
Specifying the Power Control Algorithm When closed loop power control is active, the test set signals the
UE to use either power control algroithm 1 or power control algorithm 2.
Stepping Power Up and Down Send Step Up TPC Bit Pattern and Send Step Down TPC Bit Pattern
can send individual transmit power control (TPC) commands to change the UE's power up or down by one step.
These functions can only be used when the uplink closed loop power control is set to use alternating bits.
