Idle Control System
Alternator (AL T) FR Signal (cont'd)

Inspection of ALl FR Signal.
Check for
it
short in the wire (AL T
Fline):
1. Disconnect the 4P (3 P)* con-
nector from the ALT.
2. Turn the ignition switch ON
(II),
3. Measure voltage between ECMI
PCM
connector
terminals C5
and B20.
Is there approx. 5 V?
YES
Check the operation of the ALl:
1. Turn the ignition switch OFF .
2. Reconnect the Al T 4P (3P)*
connector to the ALT.
3. Start the engine. Hold the
engine at 3,000 rpm with no
load (in Park or neutral) until
the radiator fan comes on,
then let it idle.
4. Measure voltage between ECM/
PCM co nnector terminals C5
and B20.
Does the voltage decrease when
headlights and rear defogger are
turned on?
NO
Check for an open in the wire (AL T
Flinel,
1. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
2. Disconnect the negative bat-
tery cable from the battery.
3. Disconnect ECM/ PCM con-
nector C (31P).
4.
Disconnect the
4P (3P)*
con-
nector from the ALT.
S. Connect the AL T 4P
(3P)*
con-
nector terminal No. 4 INo.
1)*
to body ground with
a
jumper
wire.
6. Check for continuity between
body ground and ECM/PCM
con nector terminal C5 .
Is there continuity?
YES
See
the AL T inspection (see sec-
tion 4).

4. Check for continuity between
body ground and ECM/PCM
con nector terminal C5.
Is there continuity?
NO
Substitute a known-good ECMI
PCM and recheek. If prescribed
voltage is now availabl., replace
the Of'iginal
ECM/PCM.
