1.
Loosen the adjusting screws.

Remove the camshaft holders.

Mark the rocker arm

4. Reinstall the camshaft and
holders.
Tight en the
camshaft holder
bolts
in a crisscross pattern, begin-
ning
with
the inner
bo lts.

Seat the camshafts
by
pushing them toward
the
dis-
tributor
end of the head w ith a
screwdriver.
6.
Zero the dial ind icator against the end
o
f the
camshaft, push the camshaft back and forth and
read the end
play.

7.
Unscrew the camshaft holder bolts two turns at a
time
,
in a criss cros
s
pattern
.
Th en
remove
the
camshaft holder bolts from the cylind er
head.
8.
Lift
the camshafts out of the cylinder head
,
wipe
them clean
,
then in spect the lift ramps
.
Replace the
camshaft if any lobes are pined,
scored,
or exces-
sively worn
.
9.
Clean
the
camshaft journal surfaces in the cylinder
head,
then set the camshaft back in
place.
Place a
plastigage strip across each journal.
10. Install the camshaft holders, and torque the bolts to
the values and in the sequence shown on page 6-31.
NOTE
:
Do
not
rotate the camshafts during in spection.

portion of plastigage on each journal.

If camshaft-to-holder oil clearance is out of
toler-
ance:

And the camshaft has already been replaced,
you must replace the cylinder head.
• If
the camshaft has not been replaced, first check
total runout with the camshaft supported on V-
blocks.

Rotate camshaft

measuring.

If the total runout of the camshafts is w ithin tol-
erance, replace
the cylinder head.

If the total runout is out of
tolerance,
replace the
camshafts and recheck

If the oil clearance is still
out of
tolerance,
replace the cylinder
head.
