STARTER MOTOR TURNS SLOWLY
• Low battery voltage
• Poorly connected battery terminal cable
• Poorly connected starter motor cable
• Faulty starter motor
• Poorly connected battery ground cable
• Incorrect engine oil viscosity
STARTER MOTOR TURNS, BUT ENGINE DOES NOT TURN
• Starter motor is running backwards
– Case assembled improperly
– Terminals connected improperly
• Faulty starter overrunning clutch
• Damaged or faulty starter planetary gear
STARTER RELAY SWITCH "CLICKS", BUT ENGINE DOES NOT TURN OVER
• Crankshaft does not turn due to engine problems

STARTER MOTOR REMOVAL/

INSTALLATION

REMOVAL
Remove the following:
– Battery (-) terminal
– Engine cover
– R. engine under cover (page 6-5)
– Regulator/rectifier/70A fuse box (page 10-4)
– Fuse box bracket (page 10-4)
Remove the bolt [1] and oil level gauge pipe [2].
Remove the O-ring [3] from the oil level gauge pipe.
Disconnect the starter solenoid terminal [4].
Move the terminal cover [1] aside, and remove the nut
[2].
Disconnect the fuse cable [3] from the B terminal [4] of
the starter motor.
Remove the washer [5] and nut [6], and disconnect the
starter cable (+) [7] from the B terminal of the starter
motor.
