CHARGING SYSTEM INSPECTION

CURRENT LEAKAGE INSPECTION
Rem ove the battery (page 15-5).
Turn the ignition switch off and d isconnect the nega-
tive battery cab le f ro m the battery.
Connect the ammeter
(+)
probe to the ground cable
and the ammeter (-) probe to the battery (-) terminal.
With the ignition switch off, check for current leakage.

I
When measuring current using a tester, set it to a
high range, and then bring the range down to an
appropriate lev el. Cur rent flow hi gh er than the
range selected ma y blowout the fuse in t he teste r.
While measuring current, do not turn the ignition
on. A sud den surge of current may blowout t he
fuse in th e teste r.
SPECIFIED CURRENT LEAKAGE: 1.2 rnA max.
If cu rrent leakage exc eeds th e specified value, a sho rt-
ed circ uit is likely.
Locate th e sho rt by disconn ectin g co nnect ions on e by
o ne and me asuring th e current .
CHARGING VOLTAGE INSPECTION
Be su re t he battery is in good cond ition bef ore per-
fo rming this test.
Warm up the eng ine t o normal ope rating
te mperature.
Stop the engine, and connect the multimeter as
shown.
To prevent a short, m ake absolutely certain whic h are
the positive and negative te rminals or cable.
Restart the eng ine .
With the headlight on Hi beam, measure the voltage
on the m ultimeter w hen the engine runs at 5,000 rpm.
Standard: Measured battery voltage (page 16·51

Measured charging voltage (see above) < 15.5 V at
5.000 rpm
