Step 7 – Pack the electrode site.
Cut gelfoam (Spongostan Dental MS0005, from Ethicon) into small pieces
approximatively 0.5 mm x 0.5 mm. Make a greasy antibiotic by smashing antibiotic
pills (such as Bimixin: neomycin sulphate + bacitracin) into a powder and mixing it
into a sterile petroleum-based cream. Spread this mixture onto the surface of the
gelfoam pieces. Carefully fill the hole of the craniotomy without damaging the
electrodes.
Step 8 – Solder ground and reference.
Solder the ground and reference wires from the microdrive to the corresponding wires
soldered on the screws in step two. Remember to remove the insulation plastic that
surround the wire at the soldering point. Depending on the type of metal, it could be
difficult or impossible to solder the wire. In this case, crimp the two cables using an
AMP crimp connector as shown below.
