5.7.2 VALVE SPRING INSPECTION

(LENGTH, TENSION AND SQUARENESS)

1. Measure the free length of the spring with vernier
calipers.
2. Place the spring on a spring compression tester
and compress to the specified length to measure
the tension.
3. If the measured value is less than the allowable
limit, replace the valve spring.

Place the spring on a flat plate and then put a
square at its side.
Measure the maximum distance "A" while rotating
the spring.
If the measurement exceeds the allowable limit, re-
place the spring.
