3. Using a file, notch windshield and back
window pinchweld at fabric roof cover seams to
insure proper location of new fabric roof cover
during installation procedure.
4. Remove drive nails from edge of fabric
cover at windshield and back window opening. At
roof panel extension (at belt) remove screws or
drive nails.
NOTE: Drive nails can best be removed by
first driving a screwdriver or suitable tool un-
der heads of the nails to loosen them. Diagonal
cutters or similar tool can then be used to grasp
nails and twist them out. Unnecessary enlarge-
ment of holes in roof panel should be avoided.
5. Remove flexible retainer securing fabric
cover inside right and left drip moldings on 6039
style by inserting tip of screwdriver or similar
tool under retainer at front of drip molding. Re-
move retainer by disengaging fingers from drip
molding flange.
NOTE: If flexible retainers are damaged
during removal procedure, retainers should be
replaced with new parts.
6. Prior to removing fabric roof cover, heating
rear quarter areas with heat lamps will permit
easier loosening of cemented edges.
7. Loosen cemented edges of fabric roof cover
at windshield, side roof rails, back window, and
rear quarter areas; then carefully remove fabric
cover from body.
IMPORTANT; Exercise care when removing
fabric cover so felt pad will not be damaged.
b. Installation
1. Check all cementing surfaces on body to in-
sure a smooth surface. Cementing surface must
be smooth to prevent "highlighting" of excess
cement through fabric cover after new cover has
been installed. Clean off old cement as required.
NOTE: Inspect felt padding for any irregu-
larities. Where necessary, replace or repair
padding, cementing it to roof panel with ap-
proved trim cement.
2. To permit easier fitting and removing of
wrinkles from new cover assembly, where possi-
ble, install new cover at room temperature
(approximately 72°).
3. Lay out new fabric cover on clean protected
surface with inner layer of material exposed.
4. Apply nitrile type non-staining weatherstrip
cement to attaching surfaces of body. Also apply

Cementing Fabric Roof Cover
nitrile type non-staining weatherstrip cement to
perimeter of fabric roof cover, Fig. 16-21.
IMPORTANT: Application of cement to fabric
cover must only be to corresponding cementing
areas of roof panel. No cement should come in
contact with felt pad.
5. Position fabric cover over roof panel and
align seams at locating notches previously made
on windshield and back window pinchwelds during
removal procedure.
IMPORTANT: Apply extra bead of nitrile
type non-staining weatherstrip cement to each
side of dielectric seams between fabric cover
and roof panel at windshield and back window
openings, A, Fig. 16-20.
6. At back window opening install a drive nail
at each seam location. A in Fig. 16-20 is typical
of both seam locations at windshield and back
window openings.
NOTE: When installing drive nails it is best
first to use an awl or similar tool to start a hole
in metal. Drive nails at seam locations should
be installed only far enough to hold cover, since
repositioning of cover may be necessary. In-
stallation of drive nails should also be as low as
possible in windshield and back window opening
to prevent cutting edge of fabric cover by ham-
mer blows.
7. At front of body, carefully stretch fabric
cover forward and install a drive nail in wind-
shield opening at each seam location, shown at A,
Fig. 16-20.
8. Carefully smooth out cover to each side roof
rail and check fit of cover.
9. At right rear quarter area, pull fabric cover
down and rearward and fasten cover (cement only)
into back window opening. Also stretch and fasten
