ENGINE MECHANICAL
A defective intake valve will allow compression
to leak by and may be discovered by removing the
air cleaner and listening at the carburetor. A de-
fective exhaust valve may be detected in a similar
manner, as the compression leak will be heard
through the exhaust pipe.
With the engine operated under a slight load,
bubbles will appear in the radiator coolant if a
leaking cylinder head gasket is involved.
If the trouble is not mechanical, refer to the
tests outlined in Section 12 for electrical items
or Section 10 for carburetion.
6. Remove all test equipment from engine.
2. Engine Front Cover
Removal and Installation

5. Remove four cap screws that hold fan blade
assembly to water pump and remove fan blade
assembly.
NOTE:
If car is equipped with Air Condi-
tioner, partially remove compressor as des-
cribed
in
Section
13, Note
29a.
Remove
compressor belt.
6. Remove power steering pump belt, generator
belt, and pulley.
7. Remove two cap screws that hold power
steering pump bracket to cylinder block and po-
sition pump and bracket to one side. Do not
disconnect hoses.
8. Remove two cap screws that hold generator
support bracket: to cylinder head water outlet pipe
and position generator and support bracket away

in Fig. 9-5.
13. Remove cork plug from end of crankshaft.
14. Install Harmonic Balancer
Puller
Pilot,
J-21052-4, in bore in end of crankshaft, Fig. 9-5.
15. Install Holding Base, J-21052-1, on front
of pulley, lining up scribe mark on base with key
slot in harmonic balancer, and install four holding
screws with washers finger tight, Fig. 9-6. Do not
use a wrench to tighten screws.
16. Thread Puller Screw, J-21052-2, into base
until screw contacts pilot.
17. Using a 7/8 inch wrench, remove harmonic
balancer assembly from crankshaft,
Fig. 9-6.
NOTE:
Use of shop air pressure to hold one
piston within its compression stroke will make
it possible to remove harmonic balancer with-
out the crankshaft turning over. Remove an ac-
cessible spark plug, install Adapter J-9388 in
spark plug port, and fill cylinder with air to
hold piston within its compression stroke.
