ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
12-31
d. Adjusting Field Relay Closing Range
1. Connect a 50-70 ohm variable resistor and a
voltmeter to the adapter as shown in Fig. 12-47.
Turn variable resistor to open or full resistance
position and leave ignition switch in
tion.
'Off" posi-
2. Slowly decrease resistance and note closing
voltage of relay. Correct closing voltage is 2.3
to 3.7 volts. Adjust by bending as illustrated in
Fig. 12-48.
41. Contact Points Cleaning
The voltage regulator contacts should not be
cleaned unless electrical performance indicates
it is necessary. A sooty or discolored condition
of contacts is normal after a relatively short
period of operation and is not an indication that
cleaning is necessary. However if voltage fluc-
tuates as evidenced by an unsteady voltmeter
reading when checking voltage setting, contacts
may have excessive resistance or be sticking.
Before cleaning contacts, make certain unsteady
voltage is not being caused by loose connections
or high resistance elsewhere in system. If volt-
meter reading is still unsteady, contacts should be
cleaned.
1. Clean contacts of voltage regulator unit by
folding over a strip of No. 400 silicon carbide
paper and pulling paper back and forth between
contacts.
2. Wash contacts with trichlorethylene or al-
cohol to remove any residue.

3. If voltage control has not improved, repeat
cleaning and washing process.
4. Clean field relay contacts with a thin, fine-
cut flat file. Remove only enough material to
clean points.
NOTE:
Never use emery cloth or sandpaper
to clean contact points.
42. Regulator Mechanical Adjustments
(Off Car)
a. Voltage Regulator—Point Opening
1. Insert .014 feeler gage and adjust by bending
upper contact arm being careful not to bend
hinge, Fig. 12-49.
b. Voltage Regulator—Air Gap
1. Measure with .060 feeler gage. Adjust by
turning nylon nut located on contact support,
Fig. 12-50.
c. Field Relay—Air Gap
1. Place finger on armature until contacts just
touch.
2. Measure with .015 wire gage, Fig. 12-51.
If adjustment is necessary carefully bend flat
contact support spring.
d. Field Relay—Point Opening
1. Insert .030 wire gage in point opening, Fig.
12-52. Adjust by bending armature stop.
