WINDSHIELD WIPER AND WASHER DIAGNOSIS CHART (Cont'd.)
CONDITION
Wiper Will Not Shut Off.
Excessive Speed in " H i " Speed
Range but Operates Normally
in " L o " Speed.
Wiper Operates in " H i " Speed
only.
Wiper Operates in " L o " Speed
Only.
Wiper Transmission Noise.
Blades Do Not Park; Stop at
Random.
Intermittent Operation (wiper
alternately stops and starts, at
2 to 3 minute intervals).
CAUSE
Wiper unit latching mechanism
binding.
Relay control switch defective.
Relay control coil grounded.
Drive pawl tab broken.
Resistor
on wiper
terminal
board open, or rivets loose.
Defective dash switch.
Black lead between dash switch
and wiper unit open.
Open shunt field.
Defective dash switch.
Black lead between dash switch
and
w i p e r
terminal
board
grounded.
Wiper motor black lead inter-
nally grounded.
Excessive
end
play in idle
shaft
and/or
reversing link
shaft.
Defective relay switch.
Weak circuit breaker.
Shorted
condition
in
wiper
motor.
Armature end play adjustment
too tight.
Gear end play adjustment too
tight.
REMEDY
Free up latching mechanism
and lubricate as required.
Check
relay
control as
de-
scribed in Note 80a.
R e p l a c e
relay
switch as-
sembly.
Replace drive pawl.
Replace
terminal board as-
sembly.
Check
dash
switch
as
de-
scribed in Note 79b.
Repair black lead as required.
Check continuity as described
in Note 80b, step 3b.
Check
dash
switch
as
de-
scribed in Note 79b.
Check body wiring to locate
grounded condition and repair.
Disassemble wiper as required
to locate and repair grounded
condition.
Add end play washers to obtain
.005 inch maximum end play.
Replace
r e l a y
switch
as-
sembly.
Replace motor case and brush
assembly.
Check w i p e r
motor as de-
scribed in Note 80b.
Check gear shaft end play, and
remove
washers
to
obtain
.005 inch end play.
Loosen
end
play
adjusting
screw
and
recheck
wiper.
Tighten screw finger-tight, and
back off 1/4 turn.
