- 19. Position
stabilizer
bar
with
mounting
brackets and rubber bushings under front frame
side
rails and secure with attaching screws.
Tighten screws to 20 foot-pounds. Tighten link
attaching nuts at lower suspension arms.
20. Install pulley and fan blade assembly on
water pump, and secure
with
four
attaching
screws. Tighten screws to 18 foot-pounds.
NOTE:
On cars equipped with Air Condi-
tioner, tighten screws to 26 foot-pounds.
21. Install generator belt and adjust as des-
cribed in Section 12, Note 39.
22. Install power steering pump belt and adjust
as described in Section 5, Note 3.
NOTE:
If car is equipped with Air Condi-
tioner, install compressor
as described
in
Section 13, Note 29b. Adjust compressor belt
as described in Section 13, Note 30.
23. Install engine oil pan as described in Note
19b.
24. Install carburetor air cleaner.
25. Install distributor assembly and adjust en-
gine timing as described in Section 12, Note 22b.
26. Check for coolant and oil leaks at all
connections.
3. Engine Front Cover Disassembly
and Assembly (Fig. 9-9)
a. Disassembly
1. Remove two cap screws that hold oil filter
support bracket to front cover and remove support
bracket. Discard gasket.
2. Remove five cap screws that hold water
pump to front cover and remove water pump. Dis-
card gasket.
3. Remove four cap screws that hold oil pump
cover plate to pump housing and remove cover
plate. Discard gasket.
CAUTION:
Be careful pump gears do not
fall out of housing when cover plate is removed.
4. Slide drive shaft and gear out of pump
housing.
5. Slide driven gear out of pump housing.
6. Remove front cover oil seal only if defective,
as described in Note 4.
b. Assembly
1. Install pump drive shaft and gear in pump
housing.
2. Slide driven gear over stationary shaft in
pump housing.
3. Install cover plate on pump housing, using
new gasket, and secure with four attaching screws.
Tighten screws to 5 foot-pounds.
4. Install water pump over locating dowels on
front cover, using new gasket, and secure with
five attaching screws. Tighten screws to 5 foot-
pounds.
5. Install oil filter support bracket on front
cover, using new gasket, and secure with two at-
taching screws. Tighten screws to 10 foot-pounds.
CAUTION:
Before installing oil filter as-
sembly,
fill oil passages in filter
support
bracket with engine oil. This will allow oil
pump to prime itself when engine is started.
4. Engine Front Cover
Oil Seal Replacement
1. Remove front cover as described in Note 2a.
2. Using a pair of pliers, pull oil seal out
through front of cover. Discard seal.
3. Place Front Cover Support, J-21150-2, on
bench and position front cover right side up over
support, Fig. 9-10.
CAUTION:
Be sure that chamfered edge on
inside bore of support tool is in the upright
position.
4. Position new oil seal in front cover, and
place Seal Installer, J-21150-1, over seal.
