10. Install distributor cap on distributor and
connect high voltage wire to ignition coil.
11. Connect spark plug wires at plugs, and
connect spark plug wiring retainer clip to clip
retainer bracket attached to carburetor.
12. If car is equipped with Cruise Control,
connect accelerator linkage rod at control unit.
13. Install engine oil dipstick.
14. Install
water control valve on retainer
bracket
and secure with spring clip. Secure
heater inlet hose to hose retainer clamp on right
rocker arm cover.
15. If car is equipped with Air Conditioner,
install compressor as described in Section 13,
Note 29b. Adjust compressor belt as described
in Section 13, Note 30.
16. Install carburetor air cleaner.
17. Connect positive battery cable.
18. Operate engine to obtain operating temper-
ature and re-torque rocker arm cover screws
to 28 inch-pounds. Retorquing screws after the
engine has been thoroughly warmed up will com-
pensate for the gasket material taking a perma-
nent set.
19. Engine Oil Pan
Removal and Installation
a. Removal
1. Disconnect positive battery cable.
2. Drain engine oil.
3. Disconnect
wires
from starter
solenoid.
4. Remove two cap screws that hold starter
motor assembly to flywheel housing and remove
starter assembly.
5. Remove exhaust manifold pipe from exhaust
manifolds, remove heat control valve from left
manifold, and swing exhaust pipe out of the way.
6. Remove idler arm support mounting screws
from frame
side member, and lower support.
7. Remove cap screw that holds transmission
rear cooler pipe clamp to upper flywheel cover
plate.
8. Remove nut that holds transmission front
cooler pipe clamp to right front oil pan locating
stud, and remove clamp from stud.
9. Remove four cap screws and two nuts that
hold upper flywheel cover plate to flywheel hous-
ing and engine oil pan, and remove cover plate.
10. Remove fourteen cap screws and four nuts
that hold oil pan to cylinder block and engine
front cover, and remove oil pan.
11. Remove side gaskets and rubber end seals
from oil pan and discard them.
b. Installation
1. Cement new gasket to both sides of oil pan,
lining up holes in gaskets with holes in oil pan.
2. Install new rubber end seal on both ends
of oil pan by pulling locating tangs on seal through
locating holes in oil pan. Be sure seals are
firmly positioned on oil pan with ends of each
seal properly located in cut-out notches in side
gaskets.
Seal all four corner notch openings
with a coating of rubber cement.
3. Place oil pan in position on bottom surface
of cylinder block over the four locating studs,
and install four nuts and fourteen cap screws
that hold oil pan to cylinder block and engine
front cover. Tighten screws and nuts to 10 foot-
pounds.
4. Install upper flywheel housing cover plate
on flywheel housing and engine oil pan, and secure
with four screws and two nuts. Tighten screws
and nuts to 15 foot-pounds.
CAUTION:
Be sure upper edge of cover
plate is properly seated in recess in oil pan
seal.
5. Install starter assembly on flywheel hous-
ing, lining up locating dowel on starter with dowel
hole in flywheel housing.
6. Install two cap screws that hold starter as-
sembly to flywheel housing and tighten to 40 foot-
pounds. Be sure engine ground strap is connected
to the upper mounting screw.
7. Connect wires to starter solenoid.
8. Install transmission front cooler pipe clamp
on right front oil pan locating stud and secure
with attaching nut.
9. Position
transmission
rear
cooler
pipe
clamp on upper flywheel cover plate and secure
with attaching screw.
10. Install idler arm support on frame side
member and secure with attaching screws.
11. Install exhaust manifold pipe on exhaust
manifolds as described in Section 10, Note 7b.
12. Replace engine oil.
