3. Remove commutator end frame, center frame
assembly and armature assembly with overrunning
clutch from drive housing, and remove leather
brake washer from commutator end of armature.
NOTE: Care should be taken not to damage
seal between solenoid and center frame. If
seal is damaged, apply a non-hardening sealing
compound before assembling.
4. Remove overrunning clutch from armature
shaft as follows:
a. Slide thrust collar off end of armature shaft,
Fig. 12-13.

b. Slide a standard 3/8 inch pipe coupling or
other metal cylinder of suitable size onto shaft so
end of coupling or cylinder butts against edge of
retainer, Fig. 12-14. Tap end of coupling with
hammer, driving retainer towards armature and
off snap ring.
c. Remove snap ring from groove in shaft, using
pliers or other suitable tool. If snap ring is badly
distorted during removal, it will be necessary to
use a new one when reassembling shaft.
d. Slide retainer and clutch assembly from arm-
ature shaft.
5. To disassemble solenoid, proceed as follows:
a. Remove two screws retaining solenoid as-
sembly to starter drive housing and remove sole-
noid and solenoid return spring from housing by
rotating solenoid assembly counterclockwise.
b. Remove two nuts and seals from "motor"
terminal and " S " terminal on solenoid housing.
c. Remove two screws and seals retaining con-
tact cover to solenoid housing and remove contact
cover.
d. Remove push rod assembly.
e. To disassemble push rod assembly, rotate
spring retainer cap 90° and separate retainer,
spring, insulation washer, and contact washer from
push rod stem.
18. Starter Motor Assembly
and Installation
a. Assembly
1. Assemble overrunning clutch to armature
shaft as follows:
a. Lubricate drive end of armature shaft with a
few drops of SAE 10W oil.
b. Slide clutch assembly onto armature shaft
with pinion outward, Fig. 12-13.
c. Slide retainer onto shaft with cupped surface
facing end of shaft, Fig. 12-13.
d. Stand armature on end of a wood surface with
commutator down. Position snap ring on upper end
of shaft and hold in place with a wood block. Hit
wood block with hammer, to force snap ring on end
of shaft, Fig. 12-15. Slide snap ring down into
groove.
e. Assemble thrust collar on shaft with shoulder
next to snap ring, Fig. 12-16.
