20. Connect positive battery cable.
21. Operate engine to obtain operating temper-
ature and re-torque rocker arm cover screws
to 28 inch-pounds.
16. Valve Lifter Removal
When removing hydraulic valve lifters from
relatively new engines, or from engines that have
a minimum build-up of gum or varnish on the
lifter body, it is not necessary to remove the
intake manifold.
Instead, follow procedure out-
lined below:
1. Disconnect positive battery cable.
2. Remove carburetor air cleaner.
3. If car is equipped with Air Conditioner,
partially remove compressor
as described in
Section 13, Note 29a.
4. Remove water control valve from retainer
bracket by removing spring clip. Remove heater
inlet hose from hose retainer clamp on right
rocker arm cover. Do not disconnect heater hoses
from water control valve.
5. Remove engine oil dipstick.
6. If car is equipped with Cruise Control, dis-
connect accelerator linkage rod at control unit.
7. Disconnect spark plug wires at plugs, and
disconnect spark plug wiring retainer clip from
clip retainer bracket attached to carburetor.
8. Disconnect high voltage wire at ignition coil
and remove distributor cap from
distributor.
9. Remove rocker arm cover screws and r e -
move rocker arm covers, secondary wiring, and
distributor cap as an assembly.
10. Loosen cap screws (four on each side)
that hold rocker arm assemblies to cylinder
heads and remove push rods through openings
in cylinder heads.
11. With aid of mechanical fingers or a magnet
attached to a long rod, remove lifters through
push rod openings, keeping them in order as
they are removed.
NOTE:
If,
because of gum and varnish,
lifters cannot be removed by the procedure
outlined above, perform the following additional
steps:
12. Remove intake manifold as described in
Note 7, Steps 18 through 29.
13. Remove front and center cap screws that
hold valve compartment cover to cylinder block.
14. Remove long screw that holds ventilator
valve connector to valve compartment cover and
remove connector with hose attached.
15. Remove
valve compartment cover
from
cylinder block and discard gasket.
16. Using a small screwdriver, or pointed tool,
remove lifters from engine, keeping them in
order so they can be reinstalled in same bores
from which they were removed. Use Valve Lifter
Remover, J-3049, to remove any lifters that are
stuck, rotating lifter back and forth while lifting,
Fig. 9-21.

Disassembly and Assembly
a. Disassembly
NOTE:
Valve
plungers
and
bodies
are
matched pairs and are not interchangeable with
one another. In order to fit properly, they must
be reassembled to their original matching pairs.
1. Press down on center of valve lifter push
rod cup.
2. Using a pointed tool, remove lock ring from
groove while holding cup down.
3. Invert lifter
and slide out push rod cup,
plunger, ball, small spring, ball retainer and
spring.
If plunger is stuck in lifter body, place lifter,
push rod end down, in Valve Lifter Plunger Re-
mover, J-4160, Fig. 9-22. Holding tool firmly
in hand with thumb over lifter body, strike tool
sharply on block of wood or wooden bench until
plunger falls out of body.
b. Assembly
1. Place ball on its seat in lower end of plunger
while holding plunger upside down. Place small
spring on ball.
