b. Heat Sink (Fig. 12-38)
1. Inspect heat sink for signs of cracks.
2. If necessary, replace heat sink by removing
two terminal bolts, right brush holder assembly,
and capacitor lead retaining screw. Carefully
note arrangement of parts so that "BAT" and
"GRD" terminals are replaced in the same order.
c. Diodes
1. Make sure that stator is disconnected and
that each diode lead is disconnected.
2. Connect test light, J-21008, leads across each
diode, first in one direction and then in the other,
Fig. 12-39.
NOTE: When performing these tests, use
only Test Light J-21008.
3. If lamp lights in both directions, or fails to
light in both directions, diode is defective. When
checking a good diode, lamp will light in only one
direction.
4. If necessary, replace defective diode as fol-
lows:
a. Support inside of end frame or heat sink
with Support Tool, J-9717-2, and press out diode
with Removal Tool, J-9717-1, and an arbor press
or vise.
CAUTION: Do not remove diode by striking
with a hammer as shock may damage other
diodes.
b. Support outside of end frame or heat sink
around diode hole on a flat surface or with Support
Tool, J-9717-2, and press new diode into position
with Installer Tool, J-9600-2, and an arbor press
or vise.
c. Test new diode as outlined in step 2.
d. Capacitor
It is difficult to test any capacitor for a defect.
However, if the generator has experienced re-
peated diode failure, the capacitor should be re-
placed.
1. If necessary, replace capacitor by first re-
moving lead retaining screw. Press old capacitor
out from inside end frame, using diode Installer
Tool, J-9600-2, and an arbor press or vise.
