ENGINE MECHANICAL
15. Disconnect transmission TV rod, throttle
return spring, and throttle control linkage at
carburetor,
NOTE:
If car is equipped with Cruise Con-
trol, disconnect and remove accelerator linkage
rod.
16. Disconnect ignition resistor wire at ignition
coil and temperature indicator wire at temper-
ature indicator unit.
17. Disconnect oil pressure
oil pressure indicator unit.

18. At cowl, disconnect ground strap on rear of
each cylinder head.
19. Disconnect power brake vacuum hose from
fitting at rear of carburetor. On cars equipped
with Air Conditioner, disconnect vacuum hose
from fast idle unit on carburetor.
20. Disconnect throttle return valve vacuum
hose and parking brake vacuum hose from fitting
on rear of intake manifold. On cars equipped with
vacuum door locks, disconnect vacuum door lock
hose from same fitting.
21. Remove the two center cap screws (on each
side) from lower row of cylinder head attaching
screws.

22. Install adapter plates with chain on cylinder
heads and secure with mounting screws. Attach
chain to chain fall or hoist above engine and take
up slack on chain.
NOTE:
If adapter plates are not available,
use four large eye bolts (two on each side) with
chain.
23. Install an extra chain around cylinder head
water outlet pipe and attach to chain fall or hoist
above engine making a three point suspension.
CAUTION:
Chain must be as tight as pos-
sible to prevent engine from tilting forward
when engine is removed from car.
24. Remove the two top cap screws that hold
transmission flywheel housing to cylinder block.
25. Raise front end of car and place jack stands
under front end of car.
26. Disconnect wires from starter solenoid and
remove starter assembly.
27. Remove
transmission

slush
deflector.
CAUTION:
Reinstall the transmission
oil
pan screw to prevent leakage of transmission
fluid.
28. Disconnect transmission TV rod at trans-
mission and remove TV rod.
29. Loosen engine side support cushions from
transmission bell housing.
30. Remove
front
transmission cooler pipe
clamp from right front oil pan locating stud and
rear cooler pipe clamp from upper flywheel hous-
ing cover plate.
31. Remove engine front
support stud nuts.
32. Remove upper and lower flywheel housing
cover plates.
33. Disconnect rubber fuel line at steel fuel
line. On cars equipped with Air Conditioner, dis-
connect rubber vapor return line at steel line.
34. Remove cap screw that holds transmission
filler tube bracket to right exhaust manifold.
35. Place floor jack with a block of wood under
transmission oil pan as far forward as possible
and raise transmission to take strain off frame
cross member.
36. Remove four nuts that hold flex plate to
transmission flywheel.
NOTE:
This can be done by removing cork
plug from end of crankshaft, installing a 1962
harmonic
balancer-to-crankshaft
screw and
washer in end of crankshaft, and rotating crank-
shaft until nuts can be removed.
37. Remove four remaining cap screws that
hold transmission flywheel housing to cylinder
block.
38. Disconnect exhaust pipe from exhaust mani-
folds and remove heat control valve.
39. Remove engine from car by carefully lifting
engine slightly upward and forward to disengage
locating dowels on cylinder block from dowel
holes in flywheel housing and flex plate from lo-
cating studs on flywheel. Then lift straight up
until engine front support studs are free from
slots in frame.
CAUTION:
Extreme care should be exer-
cised to avoid damaging engine flex plate.
40. Remove flex plate from end of crankshaft,
if necessary, and place engine on engine stand
and remove adapter plates (or eye bolts) with
chains from engine.
38. Engine Installation
(Without Transmission)
1. Install flex plate, if removed, on crankshaft
and secure with six attaching screws. Tighten
screws to 70 foot-pounds.
