2. Remove cotter pin from end of rocker shaft
(end with chamfered edge) and remove washer,
spring, and second washer. Discard cotter pin.
3. Remove rocker arms, brackets, and springs
from shaft, keeping them in order so that they can
be installed in the exact same position.
4. Measure rocker shaft in center of rocker
arm wear pattern. If this diameter is more than
.003 inch smaller than diameter of shaft in ad-
jacent, unworn section, shaft should be replaced.
b. Assembly
1. If a new rocker shaft is necessary, install
new cotter pin on end of shaft (end without cham-
fered edge).
2. Install washer, spring washer, and second
washer over shaft.
3. Install rocker arms, brackets, and springs
on shaft as shown in Fig. 9-18.
NOTE:
Oil grooves in rocker shaft should
face downward toward the cylinder head and
notches in ends of shaft should face engine
when assembly is installed on cylinder head.
4. Install washer, spring washer, and second
washer on shaft and secure with new cotter pin.
5. Line up mounting holes in rocker shaft with
holes
in brackets
and install four
mounting
screws.
CAUTION:
Thinner
end
of
rocker
shaft
brackets should be against heads of screws.
13. Cylinder Head Installation
1. Install exhaust manifold on cylinder head,
using new gaskets, and secure with attaching
screws. Tighten screw to 60 foot-pounds.
2. Apply a coat of high compression gasket
cement to both sides of new cylinder head gasket.
CAUTION:
Extreme care must be used when
installing cylinder head gaskets to assure free-
dom from dirt particles between the gasket and
the cylinder block or head. Any foreign ma-
terial can cause water or compression leaks.
Blow out cylinder head passages and wipe
machined surfaces of cylinder head and block
clean.
3. Install gasket over dowels in cylinder block
with side stamped " T O P " facing upward.
4. Using Cylinder Head Lifting Hooks, J-4159,
place cylinder head in position over dowels.
NOTE:
On cars equipped with Air Con-
ditioner, the right rocker arm assembly must
be installed with cylinder head because of
interference between rear rocker arm assem-
bly mounting screw and Air Conditioner blower
motor and inlet assembly.
5. Install thirteen cylinder head cap screws
in lower and center rows and tighten finger tight.
6. Remove Cylinder Head Lifting Hooks, J-4159,
and install spark plugs, tightening to 25 foot-
pounds.
7. Install push rods through openings in cylin-
der head. Bottoms of push rods must be seated
in hydraulic valve lifter cups.
