frame and, using a flat plate, press bearing from
outside toward inside until flush.
37. Generator, Assembly
a. Slip Ring End Frame
1. Install stator into slip ring end frame with
three stator leads projecting near connecting
terminals.
2. Connect end frame diode lead, heat sink
diode lead, and stator lead to their respective ter-
minals and install retaining nuts and lock washers.
3. Clean brushes with soft dry cloth to remove
any signs of lubricant. Install brushes and springs
into brush holder and insert a straight wire or
pin through hole in end frame and holes in brush
holder. This will hold brushes until rotor is as-
sembled into end frame.
b. Drive End Frame
1. Place rotor in a vise with soft jaws, so that
threaded end of shaft is up.
2. Slide large collar over rotor shaft.
3. Slide drive end frame over rotor shaft.
4. Install smaller collar and fan on the shaft.
5. Slide pulley down over shaft with hub down-
ward.
6. Install washer and nut on shaft and tighten to
55 foot-pounds.
c. Assembly of Components
1. Clean slip rings with a soft dry cloth to re-
move any sign of lubricant.
2. Position the two end frames in relation to
-each other as shown in Fig. 12-42. Adjusting lug
should be directly above "R" and " F " terminals.
3. Install rotor, complete with drive end frame,
into slip ring end frame, and retain with four
through-bolts.
4. Remove wire or pin projecting through rear
of slip ring end frame, allowing brushes to seat
on slip ring.
38. Generator Installation
1. Slip generator over locating stud on mani-
fold and loosely install generator link adjusting
screw.

2. Install support bracket with attaching screws
over locating stud on manifold and loosely install
cap screws.
3. Install washer and nut over locating stud and
secure finger tight.
4. Tighten manifold bolts to 18 foot-pounds.
5. Adjust drive belt as described in Note 39.
6. Tighten nut on locating stud.
7. Connect wires and connector to generator.
8. Connect battery ground strap.
39. Generator Belt Adjustment
a. Checking
1. Place Belt Tension Gage, J-7316, on drive
belt mid-way between pulleys.
2. Check gage reading. Proper belt tension for
a used belt is 70 foot-pounds and for a new belt,
100 foot-pounds. If belt tension is incorrect,
adjust belt as described below.
b. Adjusting
1. Loosen generator link adjusting screw and
nut over locating stud.
2. Move generator as required until correct
belt tension is obtained on gage.
3. Tighten generator link adjusting screw to 10
foot-pounds.
