ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
7. Bring engine speed up to 2500 rpm and note
voltage setting.
Regulator should be operating
within range of specifications listed in ambient
temperature chart.
NOTE:
Regulator
should be operating on
upper contacts. If it will not operate on upper
or shorting contacts, battery is in an extreme
state of discharge, and must be at least par-
tially recharged before proceeding further. The
methods of identifying upper and lower contacts
are covered in Note 40b.
8. If voltage regulator setting is out of limits,
make a note of change to put voltage in middle of
specified range.
9. Disconnect regulator adapter No. 4 lead at
wiring harness connector.
10. Disconnect
jumper
lead from
generator
"BAT" terminal.
11. Remove cover.
12. Reconnect jumper lead at generator "BAT"
terminal.
13. Reconnect No. 4 lead at harness connector.
14. To adjust voltage setting while operating on
upper or shorting contacts turn adjusting screw as
shown in Fig. 12-46.
NOTE:
Always make final setting by turning
screw
clockwise.
This insures that
spring
holder will be against head of the screw. If it
is necessary to turn screw counterclockwise,
turn until screw head is approximately 1/8 inch
above adjusting
bracket, then pry holder up
against screw head and turn clockwise to make
setting.
ADJUSTING SCREW
(TURN TO ADJUST
VOLTAGE SETTING)

15. Repeat steps 9 and 10.
16. Install cover.
17. Repeat steps 12 and 13.
18. Cycle generator as described in steps 4
to 6.
19. Operate at 2500 engine rpm and note setting.
Re-adjust if necessary, always cycling generator
as covered in steps 4 to 6 before reading final
voltage setting on voltmeter.
b. Adjusting Lower Contacts
1. With equipment used in upper contact setting
in place, check lower setting by slowly increasing
resistance of variable resistor with engine oper-
ating at 2500 rpm until regulator begins to operate
on lower set of contacts as evidenced by a drop in
the voltmeter reading. Operation on lower con-
tacts should be .1-.3 volt lower than on upper
contacts.
NOTE:
If turning variable resistor does not
cause regulator to operate on lower set of con-
tacts, return to "no resistance" position, turn
carbon pile to slightly load battery, and then
adjust variable resistor to cause regulator to
operate on lower set of contacts. Turning on
vehicle headlights usually can substitute for
the carbon pile.
2. The difference in voltage between upper set
of contacts and lower set is increased by turning
nylon nut slightly to increase air gap between
armature and center of core. Decrease voltage
by turning nylon nut slightly to decrease air gap.
Lower points should just touch.
NOTE:
If air gap adjustment is necessary,
recheck voltage setting of both sets of contacts.
c. Tailoring the Voltage Setting
The voltage setting for one type of operating
condition may not be satisfactory for another.
V e h i c l e
underhood
temperatures,
operating
speeds, and nighttime use all are factors that help
determine the proper voltage setting. The proper
setting is attained when the battery remains fully
charged with a minimum use of water.
If no circuit defects are found, yet battery
remains undercharged, raise setting by .3 volt,
and then check for an improved battery condition
over a service period of reasonable length.
If battery remains overcharged, lower setting
by .3 volt, and then check for an improved battery
condition. However, never adjust voltage setting
out of limits specified in Ambient Temperature
Chart.
