ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
2. Disconnect
three
hoses
from
windshield
washer.
M a r k
hoses
a n d pump valves for
identification.
3. Disconnect multiple connectors at wiper unit.
4. Remove air intake grille as described in
Section 16, Note 6a.
5. Disconnect linkage by removing retainer.
6. Remove three attaching screws and remove
wiper assembly from under hood.
b. Installation
1. Position unit in cowl recess and install three
attaching screws. One screw also secures the
ground strap. Re-seal around screw heads with
sealing compound. Unit is in parked position when
properly installed.
2. Install washer unit connector with orange
wire nearest left hood hinge.
3. Install wiper unit connector with white wire
nearest left hood hinge.
4. Connect three hoses to pump valves as
marked during removal.
5. Connect linkage with retainer, making certain
that left blade rests above right blade and motor
is in parked position.
6. Install air intake grille as described in Sec-
tion 16, Note 6b.
7. Connect negative battery cable to battery.
76. Windshield Wiper and Washer Unit
Removal and Installation (75 and
Commercial Chassis)
a. Removal
1. Disconnect negative battery cable at battery.
2. Remove two wiring connectors.
3. Mark washer hoses for identification and
remove.
4. Disconnect wiper unit ground strap from
body.
5. Remove air intake grille as described in
Section 16, Note 6a.
6. While holding the motor shaft,
r e m o v e
Tinnerman nut retaining upper control arm to
shaft.
7. Straighten tang on lockwasher and remove
screw and washer securing lower arm to unit and
remove arm.
8. Remove upper crank arm from motor shaft
and remove boot from shaft.
NOTE:
The crank arm is to remain as a
part of the left wiper assembly.
9. Remove four wiper unit mounting screws
through air intake grille opening and remove
wiper assembly from under hood.
b. installation
1. Position wiper unit in cowl recess and se-
cure with four mounting screws. Reseal around
screw heads with sealing compound.
2. Install rubber boot and upper crank arm over
motor shaft.
3. Install lower arm and secure with washer
face nut. The nut should be tightened securely to
prevent slippage.
4. Install right control arm to shaft and while
holding motor shaft, tighten Tinnerman nut.
5. Install air intake grille as described in Sec-
tion 16, Note 6b.
6. Connect wiper unit ground strap to body.
7. Connect multiple wiper connector to wiper
unit with black wire at highest projecting tab.
8. Connect
multiple
washer
connector with
brown and white wire nearest motor.
9. Connect washer hoses as marked during
disassembly.
10. Connect negative battery cable to battery.
NOTE:
When the wiper arms and blades are
installed the motor should be in the parked po-
sition to obtain proper adjustment, and the left
blade should rest above the right blade.
77. Wiper Unit Dissassembly and
Assembly
a. Motor Disassembly (AM Series)
1. Remove two motor through bolts and adjust-
ing screw nut from motor end cover.
2. Turn adjusting screw in until flush with end
cover, then remove screw f r o m housing, Fig.
12-76.
NOTE:
This will loosen end cover from
motor housing.
3. Insert one of the through bolts in adjusting
screw opening and push against end cover to com-
plete removal of end cover from housing.
