CAUTION: If flex plate and end of crankshaft
are marked with an "O" be sure to line these
marks up.
2. Install adapter plates (or eye bolts) with
chain on cylinder heads and secure with mounting
bolts. Attach chain to chain fall or hoist above
engine and take up slack.
3. Install an extra chain around cylinder head
water outlet pipe and attach to chain fall or hoist.
NOTE: Adjust chain so that engine is at ap-
proximately the same angle as when installed
in car.
4. Place floor jack, with block of wood, under
transmission oil pan as far forward as possible.
5. Lower engine carefully in engine compart-
ment, lining up locating dowels on engine with
dowel holes in flywheel housing, and screw holes
in flex plate with locating studs on flywheel.
Loosely install nut to hold flex plate to flywheel
and install two top screws that hold flywheel hous-
ing to cylinder block. Then lower engine so that
engine front support studs are positioned in holes
in frame.
NOTE: To line up flex plate with flywheel,
it may be necessary to carefully raise floor
jack under transmission oil pan.
CAUTION: Extreme care should be exer-
cised to avoid damaging flex plate.
6. Install four remaining screws that hold fly-
wheel housing to cylinder block. Tighten all six
screws to 48 foot-pounds.
7. Install three remaining nuts that hold fly-
wheel to flex plate. Tighten all four nuts to 18
foot-pounds. Then, remove screw and washer
from end of crankshaft and reinstall cork plug.
8. Remove floor jack with wooden block from
under transmission oil pan.
9. Remove adapter plates (or eye bolts) with
chains, and reinstall cylinder head cap screws.
Tighten screws to 75 foot-pounds.
10. Install lower and upper flywheel cover
plates and secure with attaching screws.
CAUTION: Top edge of upper plate must fit
in groove in engine oil pan rear seal.
11. Secure transmission filler tube bracket to
right exhaust manifold with attaching screw.
12. Install starter assembly and secure with
two attaching screws. Tighten screws to 40 foot-
pounds. Be sure engine ground strap is connected
to upper mounting screw.
13. Connect wires to starter solenoid.
14. Install transmission rear cooler pipe clamp
on upper flywheel cover plate and secure with at-
taching screw.
15. Install transmission front cooler pipe clamp
on engine oil pan front locating stud and secure
with attaching nut.
16. Connect rubber fuel line to steel fuel line.
On cars equipped with Air Conditioner, connect
rubber vapor return line to steel line.
17. Connect exhaust manifold pipe to exhaust
manifolds as described in Section 10, Note 7a.
18. Install and connect transmission TV rod at
transmission.
19. Install transmission slush deflector.
20. Install engine front support stud nuts and
tighten to 90 foot-pounds.
21. Adjust engine side support cushions as des-
cribed in Section 6, Note 14, Steps 23 through 33.
22. Remove jack stands and lower front end of
car to floor.
23. Connect engine ground strap on rear of each
cylinder head to cowl.
24. Install engine oil dipstick, transmission
fluid dipstick and engine oil filler tube cap.
25. Connect wire to oil pressure indicator unit.
26. Connect power brake vacuum hose to fitting
at rear of carburetor. On cars equipped with Air
Conditioner, connect vacuum hose to fast idle con-
trol unit on carburetor.
27. Connect throttle return valve vacuum hose
and parking brake vacuum hose to fitting on rear
of intake manifold. On cars equipped with vacuum
door locks, connect vacuum door lock hose to
same fitting.
28. Connect ignition resistor wire to ignition
coil and temperature indicator wire to temper-
ature indicator unit.
29. Connect transmission TV rod to carburetor
throttle lever.
30. Connect throttle control linkage to carbu-
retor throttle lever and secure with throttle re-
turn spring.
31. Install power steering pump with bracket on
cylinder block and secure with two attaching
screws.
