2. Check for a defective battery as covered in
Notes 2, 4 and 6.
3. Check operation of generator tell-tale bulb
as described in Note 32.
b. Testing Indicator Lamp Circuit
Resistance Wire
1. Connect a voltmeter from adapter to ground
as shown in Fig. 12-32. Turn ignition switch to
ACC position. If the voltmeter reads zero the
resistance wire is open. This wire is located in
generator regulator harness. Resistance value is
20 ohms, and the wattage rating is 6.25 watts
minimum.
c. Testing for Malfunction of Field Relay
N0T2: If indicator lamp operates normally,
field relay is operating normally. However, if
indicator lamp fails to go out with generator in
operation, fault may be in the field relay, or in
the generator. To determine which is at fault
proceed as follows:

1. Make connections as shown in Fig. 12-33.
2. Connect a tachometer in system and operate
engine at 1000 rpm. If voltmeter reading is five
volts or above and relay fails to close, field relay
is defective and must be checked as described in
Note 40d. If voltmeter reading is below five volts,
generator output should be checked.
d. Testing Generator Output
1. Disconnect battery cable at "BAT" terminal
of generator.
2. Connect red lead of ammeter to "BAT" ter-
minal of generator and black lead to disconnected
lead.
3. Connect red lead of voltmeter to "BAT" ter-
minal of generator and black lead to ground.
4. Make connections as shown in Fig. 12-34.
5. Load battery with carbon pile rheostat to pre-
vent high voltage. Do not allow generator voltage
to exceed 14 volts.
6. Connect tachometer in system and operate
engine at 1000 rpm. The 42 amp generator should
