4. Tighten nut over locating stud to 18 foot-
pounds.
40. Regulator Tests and Adjustments
The voltage regulator unit limits voltage to the
value to which the unit is adjusted. Tests should
be made at normal operating temperature.
A Voltage Regulator Temperature Gage, J-8529,
or similar thermometer should be attached to the
regulator cover to determine voltage regulator
ambient temperature, Fig. 12-43. After regulator
is brought to a normal operating temperature, it
should be set accurately according to the following
specifications.

a. Adjusting Voltage Regulator Upper
Contacts
1. Connect an ammeter with a 1/4 ohm resis-
tor with a rating of 25 watts or more in series
in the circuit at "BAT" terminal on generator,
Fig. 12-44.
NOTE: In case battery is discharged, the
1/4 ohm resistor will limit generator output
to 10 amperes or less, which is required when
checking and adjusting voltage setting.
2. Connect adapter as shown in Fig. 12-45.
Use a 25 ohm 25 watt variable resistor in series
with regulator " F " terminal and connect jumper
lead from adapter No. 3 terminal to generator

"BAT" terminal. Connect red lead of voltmeter
to No. 3 terminal and black terminal to ground.
3. Connect tachometer and operate generator at
approximately 1500 engine rpm for 15 minutes
with regulator cover on to normalize tempera-
ture.
NOTE: Be certain all lights and accessories
are "Off".
4. To cycle generator, turn variable resistor
in field circuit to the "Off" or full resistance
position.
5. Disconnect lead at No. 4 terminal on wiring
harness connector.
6. Re-connect lead at No. 4 terminal on the
wiring harness and return variable resistor to
closed or no resistance position.
