Valve Spring Removal
3. Place cylinder head (upside down) in Cylin-
der Head Holding Stand, J-3064.
4. Place Holding Strap, J-3064, over valve
heads to hold them in place while compressing
springs, and clamp in position on head with thumb
screw provided

NOTE: If interference is noted when strap is
installed on cylinder head, it will be necessary
to grind approximately 1-3/16 inches from side
of strap, where interference is noted.
5. Invert head and place Valve Spring Com-
pressor Bar over valve stem, Fig. 9-12.
6. Using foot stirrup, compress valve spring
and remove valve locks.
7. Release compressor bar and remove valve
spring retainer, spring, and rubber seal from
lower groove in valve stem. Repeat for each
valve.
8. Cylinder Head Disassembly
1. Remove remaining spark plugs.
2. Remove

8. Invert head in stand, remove holding strap,
and remove valves from head, being sure to keep
them in order so that they can be reinstalled in
the same locations,
9. If it is necessary to remove valve guides be-
cause of excessive clearance between valve stem
and valve guide as specified in Note 10, drive out
valve guides from bottom side of cylinder head,
using Valve Stem Guide Remover, J-3062, as
shown in Fig. 9-13.

Removal and Installation
a. Removal
1. Disconnect positive battery cable.
2. Remove carburetor air cleaner.
3. Disconnect spark plug wires at plugs.
4. If working on right side of car, remove water
control valve from retainer bracket by removing
spring clip, and remove heater inlet hose from
hose retainer clamp on rocker arm cover. Do not
disconnect heater hoses from water control valve.
NOTE: If car is equipped with Air Condi-
tioner, remove compressor as described in
Section 13, Note 29a.
5. If working on left side of car, remove engine
oil dipstick. On cars equipped with Cruise Con-
trol, disconnect accelerator linkage rod at control
unit.
6. Remove four cap screws that hold rocker
arm cover to cylinder head and remove rocker
arm cover. Discard gasket.
