a. Faulty Indicator Lamp Operation
1. Indicator lamp should glow only when ignition
switch is turned "On" with the engine not running.
If the indicator lamp fails to light at this position
refer to Note 32 for tests.
b. Undercharged Battery (Evidenced by
Slow Cranking)
1. Because generator produces current at any
engine rpm, lamp should not glow any time the
engine is running. Glow indicates malfunctioning
of the generator or regulator. Test as outlined
in Note 33.
2. If generator lamp glows when the ignition is
"Off", a shorted positive diode in the heat sink is
indicated and should be tested as outlined in Note
36c.
c. Overcharged Battery (Evidenced by
Excessive Water Usage)
1. Check for a shorted battery cell as covered
in Notes 2 and 4.
2. Check for circuit defects as outlined in Note
33.
3. If no circuit defects are found, voltage regu-
lator setting is probably too high. Refer to Note
40 to adjust voltage regulator setting.
32. Testing Indicator Lamp Circuit
a. Testing for Defective Bulb
(Failure to Burn)
1. Check for defective bulb or open in wiring.
2 .Disconnect wiring harness connector and in-
sert Adapter, J-9782-3.
3. Insert Jumper Lead, J-9782-1, into wiring
harness and make connection as shown in Fig.
12-30.

NOTE: Do not leave jumper lead on for more
than ten seconds with ignition switch "On".
4. Turn ignition switch "On". If lamp does not
glow, bulb is probably burned open. If it does glow
proceed to step b.
b. Testing for Opens in Circuit
1. Make connections as shown in Fig. 12-31.
2. Turn ignition switch "On". If lamp comes
on, there is an open in regulator. If it does not
glow there is an open in the field lead between
regulator and generator or in generator field.
33. Testing Undercharged Battery
Condition
a. Preliminary Check
1. Check generator drive belt for frayed, worn
or loose condition, Adjust fan belt as outlined in
Note 39.
