4. Loosen two relay mounting screws enough to
remove spring clip.
b. Installation
1. Install new check valve on assembly and
secure with spring clip.
2. Tighten relay mounting screws.
3. Connect vacuum hose.
4. Install throttle return spring.
5. Connect accelerator linkage rod at Cruise
Control power unit if so equipped.
6. Perform throttle check valve adjustment as
outlined in Note 26f.
19. Throttle Check Valve and Relay
Assembly—Removal and
Installation (Fig. 10-8)
a. Removal
1. Disconnect accelerator rod at throttle relay.
2. Remove throttle rod and washer at throttle
rod hole. If car is equipped with Cruise Control,
disconnect Cruise Control rod and washer at
throttle rod hole.
3. Pull vacuum hose from vacuum fitting on
check valve.
4. Remove two mounting screws and remove
throttle relay assembly.
5. Remove spring clip that holds check valve
on relay assembly and remove check valve from
relay assembly.
b. Assembly
1. Install check valve on relay assembly and
secure with spring clip.
2. Install relay assembly on cowl with two
screws.
3. Connect throttle rod and washer to relay.
On cars equipped with Cruise Control, connect
Cruise Control rod and washer at throttle rod
hole.
4. Secure vacuum hose to vacuum fitting on
check valve.
5. Connect accelerator rod at relay and connect
with cotter pin.
6. Perform throttle check valve adjustment as
outlined in Note 26f.
20. Carburetor Removal
and Installation
a. Removal
1. Remove air cleaner, mounting stud, and
gasket.
2. Disconnect fuel line at carburetor.
3. Disconnect
choke
heat
pipe from choke
housing.
4. Disconnect distributor vacuum line at car-
buretor body fitting.
5. Disconnect vacuum line at idle speed-up
control if car is equipped wih Air Conditioner.
6. Remove front lock nut from carburetor to
transmission TV rod and rotate throttle lever
to allow removal of rod from trunnion. Leave
trunnion attached to throttle lever adapter plate,
since the TV rod must be readjusted when car-
buretor is replaced.
7. Disconnect throttle return spring and relay
rod.
8. Disconnect brake vacuum line by removing
rubber hose from tube.
9. Release small ventilator hose clamp attached
to insulator and remove small hose from insulator
fitting.
10. Remove nut that holds spark plug wiring
bracket
to carburetor.
Remove
bracket and
position out of way.
11. Remove three remaining nuts that hold
carburetor to intake manifold and lift carburetor
off manifold.
12. Remove carburetor insulator and gaskets,
also remove stainless steel shim on Carter car-
buretors.
Discard the two carburetor gaskets.
The insulator and stainless steel shim may be
used again if they are not warped, cracked or
corroded and can be cleaned up.
b. Installation
1. Clean surface of intake manifold, carburetor,
and insulator of any carbon, gasket material, etc.
2. Place new carburetor gasket on top of mani-
fold, place insulator on top of gasket, and place
second new carburetor gasket on top of insulator.
NOTE:
On Carter carburetors place the
stainless steel shim, coated with gasket ce-
ment, on top of the second carburetor gasket.
Engine will not idle without shim on Carter
carburetors.
