36. Crankshaft
Removal and Installation
a. Removal
1. Raise car and place jackstands under car at
all four wheels.
2. Remove timing chain and sprockets as des-
cribed in Note 31a.
3. Remove three cap screws that hold oil intake
strainer screen assembly to cylinder block and
remove intake screen assembly. Discard gasket.
4. Remove transmission as described in Section
6, Note 13.
5. Remove six screws that hold flywheel flex
plate to crankshaft and remove flex plate from
crankshaft.
6. Remove spark plugs.
7. Disconnect connecting rods and push piston
assemblies up into cylinder bores so that crank-
shaft can be removed without interferring with
rods.
CAUTION:
Use Connecting Rod Guide Set,
J-3224, to guard crankpin journals from rod
bolts.
8. Remove front and rear main bearing caps.
9. Support crankshaft at front and rear and r e -
move three intermediate bearing caps.
NOTE:
Be sure bearing caps are replaced
on block in same position and order as removed.
10. Lower crankshaft from engine.
b. Installation
1. Raise crankshaft into position and support in
place while installing main bearing caps as des-
cribed in Note 29. Use a new rear main bearing
oil seal as described in Note 30.
2. Lubricate crankpins with engine oil and pull
connecting rod and piston assemblies down to-
ward crankshaft.
CAUTION:
Use Connecting Rod Guide Set,
J-3224, to guard crankpin journals from rod
bolts.
3. Install connecting rod caps on crankshaft as
described in Note 27.
4. Install oil intake strainer screen assembly
on cylinder block, using new gasket, and secure
with three attaching screws. Tighten screws to
18 foot-pounds.
5. Install flywheel flex-plate and secure with
six attaching screws. Tighten screws to 75 foot-
pounds.
CAUTION:
If flex plate and end of crank-
shaft are marked with an " O " be sure to line
these marks up.
6. Install • transmission assembly as described
in Section 6, Note 14.
7. Install spark plugs, tighten to 25 foot-pounds
and connect spark plug wires at plugs.
8. Install timing chain and sprockets as des-
cribed in Note 31b.
9. Lower car and remove stands.
37. Engine Removal from
Car (Without Transmission)
1. Lower radio antenna.
2. Disconnect positive battery cable.
3. Remove carburetor air cleaner.
4. Drain coolant from radiator and cylinder
block.
5. Drain engine oil.
6. Remove hood as described in Section 14,
Note 2.
7. Remove radiator as described in Section 11,
Note 9.
8. If car is equipped with Air Conditioner,
partially remove compressor as described in
Section 13, Note 29a.
9. Remove fan blade assembly, pulley, and all
drive belts.
10. Remove power steering pump with bracket
and position pump and bracket to one side. Do not
disconnect hoses.
11. Disconnect wires from generator.
12. Remove engine oil dipstick, transmission
fluid dipstick, and engine oil filler tube cap.
13. Disconnect rear heater outlet hose from
hose connector at rear of engine.
14. Disconnect vacuum hose and rear heater
inlet hose at: water control valve.
