6. Remove odometer drive gear shaft by sliding
shaft slightly to left and up.
7. Remove third worm gear cover plate screw,
remove plate, and lift out third gear (blue plastic).
NOTE:
Further
disassembly requires re-
moval of field plate and speed cup assembly and
subsequent recalibration of speedometer. Re-
pairs needing disassembly beyond this point
should be referred to a United Motors Service
Station.
b. Assembly
1. Install third worm gear (blue plastic), cover
plate and retain with screw.
2. Install odometer drive gear shaft.
3. Install trip odometer, making sure slotted
projections of pinion carriers fit in positioning
slot in frame. Secure odometer drive gear shaft
and trip odometer with retainer plate and screw.
4. Set mileage recorded during disassembly and
install season odometer, making sure slotted pro-
jections of pinion carriers fit in positioning slots
in frame. Secure with retainer plate and screw.
5. Install speedometer
dial and secure with
two screws.
6. Position pointer on spindle so that it points
at approximately 30 mph and gently twist back to
" 0 " mph while pressing down lightly. Tap pointer
lightly with handle end of screwdriver to secure.
7. Check for secure pointer to spindle contact
by inserting a short piece of speedometer cable
with proper tip in drive end of speedometer. An
initial fast spin of test cable should swing pointer
to approximately 30 mph and then briskly return
to " 0 " . Perform this test several times. If point-
er becomes loose on spindle, repeat step 6.
8. If during the performance of step 7, pointer
returns to "0"intermittently or not at all, this
indicates a speed cup and magnet assembly defect
which should be referred to a United Motors Serv-
ice Station.
9. Reinstall rubber washers and grommets that
may have been removed or fallen out.
10. Install generator tell tale lens intensifier if
it has fallen out.
11. Install speedometer head assembly as de-
scribed in Note 59b.
61.Oil Pressure Indicator Service
The "telltale" oil pressure indicator light is
connected in a circuit with the ignition switch and
a pressure operated switch, which is threaded into
the oil header galley at the rear of the engine.
The indicator light warns the driver when the oil
pressure is below seven pounds.
If the light does not come on when the ignition
switch is turned on, or if the light stays on after
the engine is started, either the pressure is low
or one of the units or the wiring is defective and
should be checked as follows:
a. Light On—Engine Running
1. Circuit grounded between "telltale" light
and oil pressure switch.
2. Switch shorted. Replace switch.
3. Switch improperly calibrated. Increase en-
gine speed slightly and check to see if light goes
off
with increased pressure.
Replace switch.
4. Oil pressure too low. Remove switch and
test pressure with a reliable pressure gage. Re-
pair as necessary.
b. Ignition On—Engine Not Running—Light Off
1. Bulb burned out. Replace bulb.
2. Open circuit between ignition switch and
light or light and pressure switch.
3. Switch not grounded. Check for presence of
sealing compound on threads of switch.
4. Switch stuck. Replace switch.
62. Directional Signal Operation
The

mounted on the left side of the steering column
and the switch is located below the steering wheel
hub.
The switch that operates the front fender
cornering lights is integral with the directional
signal switch. It is part of the switch block in-
cluded in the switch assembly and is serviced
with the switch. The flasher unit is located on
the upper side of the fuse block mounting bracket
to the left of the instrument panel support.
The turn signal indicators are located at the
forward end of the front fender crown moldings.
When the signal lever is moved, the corresponding
indicator flashes rearward. When either turn sig-
nal is operating with the headlights' or parking
lights "On", the corresponding cornering light
beams to that side of the road.
When a right turn is to be signaled, the signal
lever is moved upward and the right front parking
lamp, the right rear bumper lamp, and indicator
on the right front fender begin flashing. If the
headlamps or parking lights are "On", the right
