6.6.5 Calibrate Embossed Character Relief Height and Card Flatness
1) Load hopper 1 with the chip card stock included with the replacement embosser. It is important to
use chip card stock, not plain white stock, to calibrate embossed character relief height. Plain
white stock is used for other tests, such as image quality.
2) Use a service laptop or customer workstation to send
(available from MagTek Support Services) to the device to create a test card.
3) Place the test card on a flat surface with the embossed characters facing the ceiling, and look it from
the side. Note whether the long edges are flat, bent upward ("smiling"), or bent downward
("frowning").
4) Figure 6-7 shows a front view of the lower left corner of an embossed card, and a side view below it.
Note the measurement labeled RELIEF HEIGHT.
5) Measure the test card's embossed character relief height. Generally this involves using a micrometer
or calipers, and repeatedly zeroing the measuring device to the thickness of the card, then measuring
the thickness of the card plus the embossed characters.
