Configuring Serial Ports
Serial ports provide access connections to non-LAN devices and routing connections
to networks. Each port must be configured in the software to specify the operating
parameters of the hardware and the protocol that will run on the port.
FRX4000, FRX6000, and the Frame Relay Module support physical ports, as well as
logical ports, which run on a physical frame relay port. (Configuration of logical ports
is described in Chapter 6.)
Four serial connectors in the FRX4000 reside on the system board, and four more are
available on an optional expansion card.

The physical interfaces are as follows:
Ports 0 and 1 are RS-232.
Ports 2 and 3 are determined by the attached Cabletron cables: RS-232, V.35,
RS-449, or X.21.
Ports 4–7 are determined by the expansion card (Line Interface Card) and
attached I/O cables. The Line Processor record identifies the Line Interface
Card, and only the valid interfaces will be displayed in the Port record, among:
RS-232, V.35, RS-449, and X.21. (RS-449 or X.21 requires an RS-422 LIC,
which is available by special order.)
