Database Setup Recommendations

2-2
To set up a configuration database, you must create records for all RLPs (even on an
FRX4000 or FRM, which must have RLP 0 configured), ports, and subscribers (users
of the ports), as well as other records that define the configuration of the Netlink
device. It is a good idea to review Chapter 3–Chapter 5, as well as the appropriate pro-
tocol-specific chapter(s) among Chapter 6–Chapter 13.
Before proceeding with your configuration, to be aware of all the parameters that must
be, or can be, specified. You should also be familiar with all devices that will connect
to Netlink devices; some have requirements or restrictions.
Some things you must know before configuring the database are:
(FRX6000 only) How many line processors (RLPs) are there in the node, and
what is the LP number (ID) of each? (This is determined by switch settings –
see Figure 4-4 on page 4-7.)
Will each serial port be a physical DCE or DTE (determined by cabling)? What
devices are directly connected locally and remotely to each port? (For an
FRX6000 RLP, locally means the device connected to the port's I/O cable—see
Figure 4-4.)
Will each port be direct-connect, leased line, or dial-in line? The modem con-
nected to a dial-in line must be configured so DSR (Data Set Ready) is not
forced high. DSR should follow CD (Carrier Detect).
(FRX6000 only) How many LAN cards are in the node, what types are they, and
which is LAN card 0? (If there is one Token Ring card, it will always be card 0.)
What addresses must be specified in various port and interface records? Each
SVC subscriber must be assigned an ID (described in Appendix A) that will be
used as a called or calling address in call setup packets. IP, IPX, LLC2, and
SNMP also require addresses for identification of networks and devices.
What are your passwords? You must enter a password to remotely control
another FRX/FRM, to perform file transfers, and to configure alarm routing.
Most parameters can be specified and/or changed using the operations
described throughout the configuration portion of this manual; others, such
as LP and port number, are defined by the hardware or specified during
software installation.
