4.5.1

General considerations

When modification work is being carried out inside the vehicle, the following points
should be considered:
-
Inside the cab, the standards relating to interior fittings for vehicles should be
taken into account. In this way, edges or sharp corners must be avoided, and a
check must be carried out on outgoing edges inside the cab, with a view to pos-
sible impacts with occupants' heads. The elements installed must be made of
soft materials and be secured with proper mounting parts.
-
Control devices may be installed in the vehicle cab. They must be within easy
reach of the driver and must not impair vision or access to other serial devices
installed in the cab.
WARNING
Do not modify or alter any control device or steering systems in the vehicle. This
can cause them to malfunction, which can lead to an accident.
-
The passage of cables or pipes through the cab must be performed in
accordance with the standards and with the guidelines in this manual. Holes
made in the cab must be hermetically sealed. Rubber grommets or another sys-
tem should be used to prevent the ingress of dust, water or other particles.
4.5.2

Noise insulation

An important factor to consider is the level of noise produced by the vehicle. Ex-
cessive noise has a negative effect on both comfort and safety while driving. The
original vehicles supplied by HMC comply with the European homologation for
acoustic insulation.
To approve the vehicle and get the Registration Certificate after the modification of
elements that are important from the point of view of noise generation, e.g. engine,
exhaust system, tyres etc., the noise level must be measured, to ensure that it is
within the limits permitted by law. For this type of testing, it is necessary to have
controlled environments, to ensure that the tests are repeatable and independent
of weather effects. This requires the use of special acoustic enclosures. In addition,
the proper equipment and tools for each measurement purpose must be used. It is
recommended that noise measurement work should be carried out by specialised
companies.
In the directives on the control of noise emissions, two types of noise are consid-
ered: the noise emitted by the vehicle in motion, and the noise generated when the
vehicle is parked. Both exterior and interior noise in the passenger compartment of
the vehicle should also be taken into account.
The production of noise can come from different sources or vehicle systems, such
as new equipment that has been installed, the wind against the body, a modification
of the exhaust system. It is necessary to identify the sources of noise and act on
them, to reduce their levels.
