INTRODUCTION
PRELIMINAR STUDIES AND CONSIDERATIONS
MOUNTING AND CONSTRUCTION
The range of vehicles supplied by HMC does not include vehicles for towing semi-
trailers . If the Body Builder wants to convert a chassis cab into a tractor for semi-
trailers, HMC should always be contacted, to obtain the appropriate authorisation.
The laws and regulations in force in each country must be complied with.
HMC recommends the installation of stabiliser bars in the front and rear axles.
VDC (Vehicle Dynamic Control system) technology cannot be incorporated in
vehicles destined to become tractor units for semi-trailers, since this system is
not adapted to work under this type of requirements. Any malfunctioning of the
VDC could cause an accident.
Subframe features
To pull a semi-trailer, the chassis frame must incorporate a subframe. The point of
the subframe is to distribute the load falling on the fifth wheel and ensure appro-
priate behaviour of the chassis frame against torsion and bending forces. A steel
subframe is recommended. This frame should extend along the entire length of the
chassis frame, to the first anchor point behind the cab.
The fifth wheel is always mounted on a base plate used to secure the fifth wheel to
the subframe, providing the group with good stability and strength. Screws are used
to attach it to the subframe.
