4.12.2 Underride guards

The underride protection, (rear or side), is an area that should be completely flat
and able to absorb energy in the event of strong impact. Its point is to prevent pas-
senger cars from going under the vehicle, and to limit the extent of injury suffered
by their occupants.

Rear underride guard
The underride protection device is considered a passive safety element that pro-
tects the rear of the vehicle. It is constructed of a rigid material and is generally de-
signed for vehicles engaged in transporting goods.
The original vehicles supplied by HMC are constructed to provide effective under-
ride protection against vehicles that could hit them from behind.
This protection is performed by a rear underride device according to Directive 70/
221/EEC in vehicles with a high dimension in the rear, such as box or tipper bodies.
Other types of vehicles which are not included in this directive because of their own
features, such as a panel van or a passenger van, offer this protection in the form
and design of the rear of the vehicle.
Generally, the rear underride guard should not be modified, because if it is, this
will render approval already obtained void.
