7.7.1

General considerations

The electronic system of the vehicles supplied by HMC consists mainly of a data
communications system that serves to connect and share information among dif-
ferent vehicle control units.
This system uses the technology CAN-bus, which is a distribution network of various
electronic signals. These signals are coded messages that can be sent, received and
processed by all systems connected to this network. Each system takes from the
network the information that it needs. Thus, for example, a signal from one system
can be used by other systems.
See chapter 7.7.2 "CAN-bus technology".
The Controller Area Network (CAN) of the vehicle can greatly reduce the number of
electrical conductors, relays and fuses necessary to develop the electrical functions
of the body, facilitating the work and lowering costs.
See chapter 7.7.3 "Electronic control units".
WARNING
The manipulation of or incorrect intervention in electronic equipment may cause
them to malfunction. In addition, due to the interconnection between the different
electronic elements of the vehicle, a problem in one of them could affect the per-
formance of other elements which have not been manipulated.
Some of these systems may be part of the control systems or vehicle safety sys-
tem. The malfunction of any of these systems could cause a dangerous situation
during driving, which could cause an accident.
HMC recommends entrusting the modification or installation of electronic equip-
ment to a specialised company.
At all events, work must be performed by qualified personnel.
CAUTION
Any alteration or modificationof the CAN BUS net of the vehicle is prohibited, as
this could cause breakdowns or failures in safety systems of the vehicle.
NOTICE
- HMC is not responsible for malfunctions of the electronic system if the
instructions contained in this manual are not followed.
- Both electrical and electronic equipment should comply with the guidelines set
out in standard ISO 16750 Road vehicles - Environmental conditions and elec-
trical testing for electrical and electronic equipment.
