INTRODUCTION
PRELIMINAR STUDIES AND CONSIDERATIONS
MOUNTING AND CONSTRUCTION
When carrying out the work of transforming the chassis, the following should be
taken into account:
-
In 4x4 vehicles, the wheelbase cannot be modified. In special cases, this possi-
bility could be looked into HMC upon receipt of documentation considered
appropriate. In any case, the relevant department at HMC should be contacted.
See General Book, chapter 2.4 "Contact possibilities".
-
Removal of the rear wheel to change the WB is not allowed. The chassis should
always be cut and spliced again. Procedures and guidelines specified in this
guide must be always followed.
-
The maximum and minimum permissible wheelbase dimensions, depending on
the type of vehicle, must be taken into account.
-
Cutting of the chassis must only be performed within the permitted areas, with
the intention of not affecting other elements or systems of the vehicle.
-
All components installed in the chassis, e.g. propeller shafts, compressed air
piping, etc., should be disassembled, and the bolted joints renewed so that they
are identical to the originals and provide the same torque.
-
The guidelines for installation and modification of electrical and electronic sys-
tems must be taken into consideration if they have been modified.
See chapter 4.15 "Electrical and electronic system modifications".
-
Reinforcements should be provided where needed.
-
Care should be taken to ensure that the modified vehicle has similar features to
those of the original vehicle.
NOTICE
For more information on modifying the wheelbase,
"Wheelbase modification".
Before tackling the task of modifying the wheelbase, the different parameters or
values which may be affected by this modification must be analysed, to ensure that
they remain within the permissible limits. The most important points to consider are:
-
Maximum permissible dimensions of the vehicle:
The final dimensions of the vehicle should be checked, once the modification
work has been undertaken, in order to be sure that they are within the per-
missible limits.
See chapter 2.3.2 "Vehicle main dimensions".
-
Maximum permissible weight on axles:
Once the modification of the vehicle has been completed, the weight on axles
must be within the permissible limits.
See chapter 2.3.3 "Weight distribution".
