4.2.4

Attachment of groups or additional equipment

When additional equipment, lateral groups or other items such as a spare wheel,
rear or lateral stirrups, winches, etc. are attached to the chassis, a number of guide-
lines should be considered.
-
They must be properly attached, with sufficient resistance and so that they do
not cause vibration. Welding must not be used to fix these elements. Bolted
connections must be used. The requirements for drilling described in this man-
ual should be followed.
See chapter 4.1.2 "Drilling work".
See chapter 4.1.3 "Bolted connection work".
-
The proper support, the number and size of screws, etc., is selected depending
of the total weight of the equipment and the location of its centre of gravity,
and on the minimum distances to the ground or to other vehicle components
that must be adhered to in order for them to work properly.
See chapter 2.3.11 "Body and chassis clearances".
-
In order to resist bending moments better, it is recommended that the support
equipment should be installed as close to the chassis cross-members as possi-
ble. Additional cross-members must not be mounted on the chassis frame,
because this could affect to the bending capacity of the vehicle. However, it is
possible to reinforce the longitudinal beam web with stiffeners.
-
It is essential to check that the dimensions of the vehicle are within the permis-
sible limits.
See chapter 2.3.2 "Vehicle main dimensions".
-
Care must be taken to ensure that the installation of the new elements does not
exceed the permissible axle loads.
See chapter 2.3.3 "Weight distribution".
-
All necessary measures must be taken to protect the new elements and attach-
ments against corrosion.
See chapter 4.1.5 "Corrosion protection".
-
For equipment mounted on the rear of the vehicle, the same procedures can be
followed as for the coupling devices.
See chapter 4.7 "Coupling device adaptations".
CAUTION
- When mounting equipment on the front of the vehicle, it is necessary to con-
tact HMC to obtain authorisation, since these changes could affect vehicle
safety systems and cause them to malfunction.
- To obtain more detailed information about authorisations.
See General Book, chapter 2.6 "Verification and certification of super-
structures.
