Side underride guard
Motor vehicles for the transport of goods with at least four wheels and a permitted
total mass exceeding 3.5 ton must be equipped with a side underride guard that
complies with the provisions of Directive 89/297/EC. Any vehicles which, because of
their own features, offer this protection in the form and design of the vehicle, e.g.
a panel van or a passenger van, are excluded from the requirement for this installa-
tion.
According to this, the following points should be taken into account:

The width of the device must never exceed the width of the vehicle. Its maxi-
mum width can be the external width of the tyres, while the minimum width is
the external width of the tyres less 100 mm on each side.
The ends of the cross should not be folded back or have a sharp outer edge,
and should be rounded with a radius of 2.5 mm minimum.
Components such as the battery box, lights, spare wheel and tool boxes, etc.,
can be mounted on these protections, provided that the prescribed instructions
are followed. But elements such as brake lines, air or hydraulic pipes must not
be installed on them.
The side underride guard must, as far as possible, extend from front to back
without interruption, but the installation must be such that allows access to any
group of the vehicle. It should be easily removable for maintenance.
The ends of the cross should not be folded back or have a sharp outer edge,
and should be rounded with a radius of 2.5 mm minimum.
The protection must not increase the overall width of the vehicle.
The design can be performed either using a single profile with a surface
extending vertically, as with several longitudinal profiles with predetermined
dimensions from one another.
