Maintenance of batteries

When charging the battery or batteries of the vehicle, care should be taken to ob-
serve the following considerations and guidelines:
-
Before charging the battery, the wires must be disconnected from the termi-
nals, since the electrical components are very sensitive to electrical circuit
overloads. Any overload or high voltage peaks can damage these elements or
the fuses that protect them.
WARNING
The battery wires or the power switch must not, under any circumstances, be dis-
connected from the vehicle with the engine running.
-
To disconnect the battery, first disconnect the negative terminal (-) and then
the positive (+) terminal. To reconnect it once has been charged, reverse this
proceedure, connecting first the positive terminal (+) and then the negative ter-
minal (-).
CAUTION
The incorrect polarity of the supply voltage can cause destruction of electrical
and electronic elements.
-
The battery must be fully charged and not damaged.
NOTICE
Do not connect batteries that have not been supplied or approved by HMC.
-
Slow battery charging is recommended, except in cases of necessity.
WARNING
- Short circuits can cause burns or fire. Therefore, when changing batteries, the
work should be carried out in a well ventilated area, in which sparks and flames
are unlikely to occur, as the battery may emit flammable gases when opened.
- Smoking is prohibited when the battery is being charged.
CAUTION
If an emergency start of the vehicle is necessary, it should be carried out with the
help of another vehicle, or using separate batteries and a jump lead. Never use a
quick charger, which can produce surge and could damage the electrical system.
CAUTION
If the batteries are frozen, they must be defrosted before they are charged.
