With the oil dipstick

Example (CL 500)
1 Oil dipstick
2 Maximum mark
3 Minimum mark
Remove dipstick 1.
Wipe the dipstick clean.
Insert the dipstick back into the dip-
stick tube as far as the stop and re-
move it again.
The oil level is correct if the level is be-
tween lower mark 3 and upper
mark 2.
Top up the oil as required
( page 378).

The difference in volume between the
lower mark and the upper mark is approximately
2 litres.

You will find a menu overview on
( page 275).
Make sure the key is in position 2 in
the ignition lock.
Press & or ( to select the
"Service" menu.
Press % or $ to select
"Engine oil level".
Press #.
The following message appears in the
multi-function display:
"Engine oil level Measuring now
Measurement accurate only if vehicle is
level"
The measurement takes a moment. You
will see one of the following messages in
the multi-function display: "Engine oil level
OK" or "Top up 1 l engine oil at filling sta-
tion"
Top up the oil as required
( page 378).

display
If the engine is at normal operating tem-
perature and the engine contains too much
oil, you will see the following message:
Engine oil level Reduce oil level.
Have excess oil siphoned off.

There is a risk of damage to the engine or
the catalytic converter if there is excess oil in the
engine.
If the following message is displayed:
"For engine oil level, turn on ignition"
Turn the key to position 2 in the igni-
tion lock ( page 229).
If you have not observed the required wait-
ing time, you will see the following mes-
sage:
"Waiting period engine oil level not ob-
served"
Repeat the measurement after about
five minutes if the engine is at normal
operating temperature.
If the engine is not at normal operating
temperature, repeat the measurement
after about 30 minutes to allow time for
the engine to reach normal operating
temperature in the meantime.
