    Getting started Unlocking The “Getting started” section provides an overview of the vehicle’s most basic func- tions. If you are already familiar with the basic functions described here, the “Controls in detail” section will provide you with further information. The corresponding page refer- ences are located at the end of each seg- ment.

    The electro-hydraulic brake system is activated ( page 89). Get in the vehicle and insert the SmartKey in the starter switch. Opening a door causes the window on that door to open slightly. They will re- turn to the up position when the door is closed.

When leaving the vehicle, always remove the SmartKey or the SmartKey with KEYLESS-GO* from the starter switch, take it with you, and lock the vehicle. Do not leave children unattended in the vehicle, or with access to an unlocked vehicle.
  • Page 38 If the SmartKey can still not be turned, the battery may not be sufficiently charged. Check the battery and charge it if necessary ( page 433). Get a jump start ( page 435). To prevent accelerated battery dis- charge or a completely discharged battery, always remove the SmartKey from the starter switch when the en- gine is not in operation.
  • Page 39 Getting started Unlocking Position 0 Before you press the KEYLESS-GO start/stop button, the vehicle’s on-board electronics have status 0 (as with SmartKey removed). Position 1 Press KEYLESS-GO start/stop button once. This supplies power for some electrical consumers, such as seat adjustment. If you now press the KEYLESS-GO start/stop button once again, the ignition (position 2)

    Adjusting Warning! All seat, head restraint, steering wheel, and rear view mirror adjustments, as well as fas- tening of seat belts, must be done before the vehicle is put into motion. Seats Warning! Do not adjust the driver’s seat while driving. Adjusting the seat while driving could cause the driver to lose control of the vehicle.

Adjust head restraint so that it is as close to the head as possible and the center of the head restraint supports the back of the head at eye level.

    Getting started Adjusting Mirrors Adjust the interior and exterior rear view mirrors before driving so that you have a good view of the road and traffic condi- tions. Warning! In case of an accident, liquid electrolyte may escape the mirror housing if the mirror glass breaks.

    Getting started Driving Warning! Make sure that absolutely no objects are ob- structing the pedals range of movement. Keep the driver’s footwell clear of all obsta- cles. If there are any floormats or carpets in the footwell, make sure that the pedals still have sufficient clearance.
  • Page 48 Warning! Never let more people ride in the vehicle than there are seat belts available. Be sure everyone riding in the vehicle is correctly restrained with a separate seat belt. Never use a seat belt for more than one person at a time.
  • Page 49 Getting started Driving With a smooth motion, pull the belt from belt outlet 1. Place the shoulder portion of the belt across the top of your shoulder and the lap portion across your hips. Push latch plate 2 into buckle 4 until it clicks.

    In a crash they may not be able to provide adequate protection. Damaged seat belts or belts that were highly stressed in an accident must be replaced. Contact an authorized Mercedes-Benz Center. Starting the engine Warning! Inhalation of exhaust gas is hazardous to your health.

Make sure the gear selector lever is set to P. Do not depress the accelerator. Turn the SmartKey in the starter switch to position 3 and hold until the engine starts ( page 36).

    Getting started Driving Driving Depress the brake pedal. Move selector lever to position D or R. Wait for the gear selection process to complete before setting the vehicle in motion. Release the brake pedal. Carefully depress the accelerator pedal. Once the vehicle is in motion, the automat- ic central locking system engages and the locking knobs drop down.

    Getting started Driving The combination switch resets automati- cally after major steering wheel move- ments. To signal minor directional changes such as changing lanes, press combi- nation switch only to point of resis- tance and release. The corresponding turn signals will flash three times. Windshield wipers The combination switch is located on the left of the steering column.
  • Page 56 Intermittent wiping Do not leave windshield wipers in inter- mittent setting when the vehicle is tak- en to an automatic car wash or during windshield cleaning. Windshield wipers will operate in the presence of water sprayed on the windshield, and wind- shield wipers may be damaged as a result.

    An ignition cable may be damaged. The engine electronics may not be operating properly. Unburned gasoline may have entered the catalytic converter and damaged it. Give very little gas. Have the problem repaired by an authorized Mercedes-Benz Center as soon as possible.

If the extent of the damage cannot be determined: Notify an authorized Mercedes-Benz Center.     Safety and Security Driving safety systems The Brake Assist System (BAS) operates in emergency situations. If you apply the brakes very quickly, the BAS automatically provides full brake boost, thereby poten- tially reducing the braking distance. Apply continuous full braking pressure until the emergency braking situation is over.

    Avoid spinning of a drive wheel for an ® extended period with the ESP switched off. This may cause serious damage to the drivetrain which is not covered by the Mercedes-Benz Limited Warranty. ® Switching on the ESP ® button 1.

A malfunction in the vehicle’s power supply or electrical system may impair brake sys- tem operation and switch it into its emer- gency operation mode. In such a case, the red brake warning lamp ( page 354) and warning messages in the instrument cluster ( page 363) come on while driving.

Con- tact an authorized Mercedes-Benz Center for further information. The electro-hydrau- lic brake system must be deactivated prior to working on the system. High pressure is intermittently built up in the system as part of its automatic self-test.
