Extending the shift range/upshifting
Steering wheel gearshift buttons
Press button 2 on the right-hand side
of the steering wheel.
The shift range ( page 266) is extend-
ed. If you are driving in manual drive
program M, the automatic transmis-
sion shifts up to the next gear.

If the maximum engine speed for the shift
range is reached and you continue to accelerate,
the automatic transmission shifts up, even if the
shift range is restricted. The engine could over-
rev.
Steering wheel gearshift paddles
Pull on right-hand paddle 2.
The shift range ( page 266) is extend-
ed. If you are driving in manual drive
program M, the automatic transmis-
sion shifts up to the next gear.
If you have selected the AMG menu in
the on-board computer ( page 287),
the upshift instruction "up" is shown in
the instrument cluster.

In the manual gearshift program, the auto-
matic transmission does not shift up on its own
even at the maximum permissible speed for the
respective gear. When the engine speed limit is
reached, the fuel supply is interrupted to avoid
overrevving the engine. Make absolutely certain
that the engine speed does not climb to the red
area in the rev counter. If this occurs, the engine
could be damaged.

Do not change down for additional engine
braking on a slippery road surface. This could
cause the drive wheels to lose their grip and
the vehicle could skid.

If you press left button
when the engine
speed is too high, the automatic transmission
will not shift down. The engine could overrev.

When the automatic transmission is in posi-
tion P, N or R you cannot change gear using the
steering wheel gearshift buttons.

program M, the automatic transmis-
sion shifts down to the next gear.

If you are driving in manual drive program
M, the automatic transmission shifts down
to the next gear.

If manual drive program M has been select-
ed and you stop the engine, the automatic trans-
mission will switch to an automatic drive
program. If automatic drive program S or C has
been selected, the automatic transmission will
remain in the respective drive program even if
the engine is restarted.
