Applying the electric parking brake man-
ually
Press handle 1.
The red ! indicator lamp in the in-
strument cluster comes on.

On steep slopes, turn the front wheels to-
wards the kerb.
i
You can apply the electric parking brake
even when there is no key in the ignition lock.
Applying the electric parking brake au-
tomatically
Your vehicle's electric parking brake is ap-
plied automatically if HOLD ( page 311)
or Distronic Plus* ( page 300) brings
your vehicle to a halt and at least one of
the following conditions is fulfilled:
The engine is switched off.
The driver's door is opened and the
seat belt is not inserted in the buckle.
The bonnet is released.
The boot lid is opened while the auto-
matic transmission is in position R.
The vehicle is stationary for a long
period.
The red ! indicator lamp in the instru-
ment cluster comes on.

In addition to the electric parking brake,
park position P can also be engaged automati-
cally.
Emergency braking using the electric
parking brake
In an emergency, you can also brake your
vehicle while it is in motion using the elec-
tric parking brake.
Press the handle for the electric park-
ing brake while the vehicle is in motion
( page 258).

Your vehicle will be braked for as long as you
keep the electric parking brake handle pressed.
The longer you press the electric parking brake,
the more firmly the vehicle will be braked.
The red ! indicator lamp in the instru-
ment cluster flashes during the braking
procedure, the "Release parking brake"
message appears in the multi-function dis-
play and you will hear a warning tone.
If you have brought your vehicle to a com-
plete halt, the electric parking brake is
then applied.
Driving and parking
Stopping the engine
Move the automatic transmission se-
lector lever to P.

Risk of accident
Do not remove the key from the ignition lock
until the vehicle is stationary. There is no
power assistance for the steering and the
brakes when the engine is not running.
You will then need to use considerably more
force to steer and to brake.
With the key
Turn the key to position 0 in the ignition
lock ( page 229) and remove it.
The immobiliser is activated.
With KEYLESS GO*
Press the KEYLESS GO button next to
the steering column.
The engine is switched off and all the
lights in the instrument cluster go out.
The status of the on-board electronics
corresponds to key position 1
( page 229).
