IEEE 802.1D
Specifies a general method for the operation of MAC bridges, including the Spanning Tree P rotocol.
IEEE 802.1Q
VLAN Tagging—Defines Ethernet frame tags which carry V LAN information. It allows switches to assign
end-stations to different virtual LANs, and defines a standard way for VLA Ns to communicate across switched
networks.
IEEE 802.3ac
Defines frame extensions for VLAN tagging.
Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP)
A protocol through which hosts can register with their local router for multicast services. If there is more than
one multicast router on a given subnetwork, one of the routers is elected "querier" and assumes the
responsibility of keeping track of group membership.
IGMP Snooping
Listening to IGMP Query and IGMP Report packets transferred bet ween IP Multicast Routers and IP Multicast
host groups to learn IP Multicast group members.
In-Band Management
Management of the net work from a station attached directly to the network.
IP Multicast Filtering
A process whereby this switch can pass multicast traffic along to participating hosts.
Layer 2
Data Link layer in the IS O 7-Lay er Data Communications Protocol. This is directly related t o the hardware
interface for network devices and passes traffic based on MA C addresses.
Layer 3
Network layer in the ISO 7-Layer Data Communic ations Prot ocol. This layer handles the routing functions for
data moving from one open system to another.

Management Information Base (MIB)
An acronym for Management Information Base. It is a set of database objects that contains information about
a specific device.
