Starter Circuit Troubleshooting
NOTE:
. Air temperature must be between 59'and 100"F (15'
a n d 3 8 " C ) d u r i n g t h i s p r o c e d u r e .
. After this test, or any subsequent repair, reset the
engine control module (ECM) to clear any diagnostic
t r o u b l e c o d e s { D T C S ) { s e e p a g e 1 1 - 3 ) .
. The battery must be in good condition and fully
c n a r g e o .
Recommended Procedure:
. Use a starter system tester.
. Connect and operate the equipment in accordance
with the manufacturer's instructions.
Allernate Procedure
1 . H o o k u p t h e f o l l o w i n g e q u i p m e n t :
. Ammeter, 0 400 A
. Voltmeter,0 20 V (accurate within 0.1 volt)
. Tachometer, 0
'1200
rpm
R e m o v e t h e N o . 2 { 1 5 A ) f u s e f r o m t h e u n d e r - d a s h
fuse/relay box.
Turn the ignition switch ON {ll} with the clutch
pedal depressed, and push the engine start switch.
Did the starter crank the engine normally?
YES The starting system is OK.l
NO Go to step 4.

4. Check the battery condition. Check electrical
connections at the battery, the negative battery
cable to body, engine ground cables, and the
starter for looseness and corrosion. Then try
s t a n i n g t h e e n g i n e a g a i n .
Did the stattet crank the engine?
YES Repairing the loose connection fixed the
problem. The starting system now is OK.l
NO lf the starter will not crank the engine at all, go
to step 5, lf it cranks the engine erratically or too
slowly, go to step 7. lf it won't disengage from the
flywheel ring gear when you release the switch,
check for the Jollowing until you find the cause.
. Solenoid plunger and switch malfunction
. Dirty drive gear or damaged overrunning clutch
5. Make sure the transmission is in neutral, then
disconnect the BLK,^/VHT wire (A) from the starter
solenoid (B). Connect a jumper wire from the
battery positive terminal to the solenoid terminal.
Did the starter crank the engine?
YES Go to step 6.
NO Remove the starter and repair or replace as
necessary.
