Crankshaft Installation

1 . C h e c k t h e c o n n e c t i n g r o d b e a r i n g c l e a r a n c e w i t h
plastigage {see page 7-9).
2 . C h e c k t h e m a i n b e a r i n g c l e a r a n c e w i t h p l a s t i g a g e
(see page 7-6).
3 . A p p l y e n g i n e o i l t o t h e m a i n b e a r i n g s a n d r o d
b e a n n g s .
4 . I n s t a l l t h e b e a r i n g h a l v e s i n t h e c y l i n d e r b l o c k a n d
connecllng roos.
5. Hold the crankshaft so rod journal No. 2 and rod
j o u r n a l N o , 3 a r e s t r a i g h t u p , a n d l o w e r t h e
crankshaft into the block.
Install the thrust washers (A) on both edges of the
N o . 4 m a i n b e a r i n q r e c e s s .

Apply engine oil to the threads of the connecting
rod bolts.
Seat the rod journals into connecting rod No. 1 and
c o n n e c t i n g r o d N o . 4 . I n s t a l l t h e c o n n e c t i n g r o d
caps and bolts finger'tight. Install the caps so the
bearing recess is on the same side as the recess in
the rod.
Rotate the crankshaft clockwise, and seat the
journals into connecting rod No. 2 and connecting
r o d N o . 3 , I n s t a l l t h e c o n n e c t i n g r o d c a p s a n d b o l t s
fingertight.

Tighten the connecting rod bolts in sequence to 25
N.m (2.5 kgf m, 18 ibf ft).
Tighten the connecting rod bolts an additional 90'.
A p p l y l i q u i d g a s k e t , p a r t N o . 0 8 7 1 8 - 0 0 0 9 ,
e v e n l y t o
the cylinder block mating surface of the lower block
and to the inner threads of the bolt holes.
NOTE: Do not install the parts if 5 minutes or more
have elapsed since applying liquid gasket. lnstead,
reapply liqu id gasket after removing old residue.
